Brazil's Far-Right Candidate Grabs Lead Ahead Of Second Round Presidential Election

Brazil's Far-Right Candidate Grabs Lead Ahead Of Second Round Presidential Election”

Bolsonaro's popularity surged as exasperated Brazilians decided he represents the best chance to turn back a wave of violent crime and dismantle what prosecutors call the world's largest political graft scheme.

Haddad has also spent much time arguing that da Silva, his mentor, was unfairly jailed - a strategy aimed at attracting voters who still feel strong affection for da Silva, known in Brazil simply as Lula.

Bolsonaro got 46.7 percent of the first round votes, while Fernando Haddad from the Workers' Party was in second place with 28.37 percent. Bolsonaro has pledged to roll back gun controls and make it easier for police to kill.

"We're going to have a huge caucus, perfectly governable, to pass the bills that the society is demanding - to conclude the reforms that are underway", Bivar said, referring to stalled efforts to trim public pensions and close a budget deficit.

As education minister both under Lula and his successor Dilma Rousseff-until 2012, when he successfully ran as mayor of Sao Paulo-Haddad was responsible for championing an anti-homophobia initiative in schools that Bolsonaro strongly opposed and that Rousseff eventually suspended.

Jair Bolsonaro, whose last-minute surge nearly gave him an electoral stunner, had 46pc compared to 29pc for former Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad, according to figures from Brazil's Superior Electoral Tribunal with 99.9pc of the vote counted.

Brazilian presidential candidate Fernando Haddad (PT), takes part in the last presidential debate ahead of the October 7 general election on October 04, 2018.

"Haddad's chance of victory depends much more on the performance of Bolsonaro than his own".

"Bolsonaro has an advantage over Haddad, he's in a growth curve. for him to lose from here, it's not about Haddad getting it right, it's about him making mistakes", he added.

The first-round results increase the possibility that the ultra-conservative Bolsonaro could become president of Brazil, which has not had a powerful right-wing political force since the end of military rule in 1985.

Mr Bolsonaro's win was predicted in the polls but the extent of his victory came as a surprise.

He expressed confidence that Bolsonaro would easily win the presidency later this month, saying that many who voted for other candidates on Sunday want to block the PT, which held the presidency from 2003 to 2016, from returning to power. He has promised to fight long-standing inequalities, scrap a major labour reform passed a year ago and invest more in education.

Bolsonaro has painted a nation in collapse, where drug traffickers and politicians steal with equal impunity, and moral rot has set in. But he has struggled to shake many voters' anger at the Workers' Party for its role in the corruption scandal.

Many voters, already disillusioned with their democracy, said they felt trapped by the choice between the two front-runners, a sentiment likely to deepen in the weeks to come.

Senna said he was anxious that Bolsonaro's presidential rivals would gang up on him and back Haddad in the runoff.

"A lot of young people are voting for him".
