China US talks on North Korea get off to frosty start

China US talks on North Korea get off to frosty start”

"Moon will deliver this message from the Pyongyang leader when he meets the Pope", the spokesperson said, adding that the South Korean leader will also seek the Vatican's support for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was ready to allow worldwide inspectors into the North's nuclear and missile sites.

Ms Nauert said Mr Pompeo "held productive discussions" with Kim.

He wouldn't be specific but said he and Kim had agreed to soon begin working-level talks on the nuts and bolts of denuclearization and on the placement of global inspectors at one of North Korea's main nuclear facilities, and had come close to finalizing a date and venue for the next Kim-Trump summit.

When asked for a date on the inspection, Pompeo responded, "As soon as we get it logistically worked out".

She added Trump "looks forward to continuing to build upon the trust established with Chairman Kim in Singapore".

The two countries have, however, been in a standoff over what the term denuclearisation means.

Unlike a trip in June, Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) did not grant Pompeo an audience.

The desire to welcome the leader of the Catholic church comes as Kim attempts to transform his image from paranoid head of a rogue state to young and dynamic world leader.

Pompeo's meeting in Beijing was the last stop of his Asia trip, meant to revitalise the stalled denuclearisation negotiations with Pyongyang, in particular, amid concerns that worsening Sino-US relations could undermine their cooperation on North Korea.

Pompeo and Kim made "significant progress" in "a long process" to denuclearize North Korea and "will continue to make significant progress and we are further along in making that progress than any administration in an awfully long time", he said.

The young leader of the isolated, impoverished but nuclear-armed North has taken a series of reconciliatory gestures since early this year, including a land summit with US President Donald Trump in June.

"We demand that the United States side immediately stop its wrong actions and words".

That progress contradicts promises North Korea has made dating back at least to 1992, and in recent months, when Kim promised to honor all past agreements and work toward denuclearization. The visit was the latest indication of deteriorating ties between the US and China, as the two sides tussle over everything from trade to Taiwan and the South China Sea.

He also emphasized the possibility of future meetings between North Korea, Japan, China and Russian Federation. He will meet the Pope and intends to relay the invitation.

"I would assume there are negotiations going on over specifics - somewhere there are people meeting, " said Dean Cheng, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

"Recently the United States escalated trade friction with China, took actions that jeopardized China's rights and interests on the Taiwan issue and unwarrantedly condemned China on its domestic and foreign policies", Wang said.
