Enable wins Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for 2nd straight year

Enable wins Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for 2nd straight year”

If the French racing authorities wanted to kick-start the new era for their revamped Longchamp with a Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe par excellence then they got it when the two British fillies, Enable and Sea Of Class, fought out an epic finish to the great race on its homecoming. There have been seven previous dual winners of the Arc and Enable will create her own piece of history if she can follow suit, as she will become the first horse to claim the prestigious contest at the newly-redeveloped ParisLongchamp.

Sea Of Class, sired by 2009 victor Sea The Stars, was some way off the leaders in the home turn but picked up pace rapidly to push Enable to the line, but Dettori's mount won by a neck in a thrilling finish.

Enable's owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah was there to see his sixth Arc victor, a record he now shares with Marcel Boussac, who dominated the race as an owner in the inter-war years.

John Gosden has admitted it would be "wonderful" if Enable was kept in training as a five-year-old, with the aim of winning an unprecedented third Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. "He wanted to come here and if she's in good form there's no reason you wouldn't try to come again".

"It's great for Prince Khalid (Abdullah, owner-breeder)".

"It was my 30th Arc and I was more nervous than ever, not to mention excited, but in the race I found myself in a fantastic spot", Dettori, who won a record-extending sixth Arc, was quoted by the BBC.

"I waited as long as I could and at the 300 (metres) she showed her trademark turn of foot".

"I've never been as nervous as this morning".

Indeed 72-year-old Fabre said that while he is pleased with the most favoured of his three runners Waldegeist, the Enable team are a formidable outfit, comparing them to two football powerhouses.

"I had a little glance, saw she was three lengths clear and thought, 'I've won this.' But the petrol ran out and I could feel James coming". She probably needed the race, but what a great job done by John and everyone at Clarehaven.

"Incredible! I felt the race today and I won the race on the pole".

Royal Marine took the hike from maiden company to the top level in his stride as he landed the Qatar Prix Jean Luc-Lagardere to give Oisin Murphy a 10th Group One success of the year.
