Intel unveils 9th generation CPU, calls it "best gaming processor"

Intel unveils 9th generation CPU, calls it

The i7-9700K will feature eight cores without hyperthreading, giving it 3.6 GHz at base and a turbo boost of 4.9 GHz on a single core.

Intel's pricing for trays of 1,000 CPUs comes in at $488 for the Core i9-9900K, $374 for the Core i7-9700K, and $262 for the Core i5-8600K.

Intel has dropped hyper-threading on its lower-end, budget processor before, but this is a high-end processor meant for gamers and creatives. The 9700K will have two more cores than the i7-8700K with 1.5MB L3 cache per core.

Intel launched its first 8th-generation Core processors a year ago with U-series mobile chips that were really just 7th-generation parts with the double the normal number of cores.

The Core i9-9900K is the flagship model from this lineup. This is quite a different configuration to its predecessor, the Core i7-8700K with 6C/12T but the same base Coffee Lake architecture.

Indeed, even though the Core i9-9900K has the same 95W power draw and even a slightly lower base clock speed compared with the Core i7-8700K (3.6GHz vs. 3.7GHz), it manages to pack in eight cores and 16 threads, compared with six cores and 12 threads in the CPU it's replacing.

Intel today officially announced the first round of 9 generation Core processors, and given all the leaks that have occurred over the past few months, there weren't too many surprises. Switching to solder should make the delicate process of delidding less appealing on these new chips.

Meanwhile, Intel's 14nm has reportedly become the most profitable line of hardware the company has ever manufactured, though that's likely in part due to the necessity of using it as long as Intel has.

The i9-9900K is available for pre-order today, and will launch on October 19th. All of the 9th gen CPUs will work on current 300-series motherboards, as well as the new Z390 motherboards coming soon.

We are now at a launch event for this processor, and will share further details if and when we can.
