Clinton says Trump remarks at Kavanaugh swearing-in undermine Supreme Court”

Kavanaugh, whose bid to join the top U.S. court almost failed after a California professor accused him of assaulting her when they were in high school, said he would enter his new job without bitterness despite a political fight that he told lawmakers had destroyed his family and his name.

Now McConnell is singing a different tune, but he says he isn't ignoring precedent, because in 2020, Republicans will, most likely, have control of the Senate and the White House.

Kavanaugh is the second justice Trump has successfully nominated to the Supreme Court, following the confirmation past year of Neil Gorsuch to the seat left by the late Antonin Scalia. Kavanaugh hears his first arguments from the bench today, having salted away the traditional duties of cafeteria supervision befitting the tradition for SCOTUS newbies.

The US president apologised to his newest Supreme Court judge "on behalf of our nation" as Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in for the cameras at the White House.

"I think a lot of Democrats are going to vote Republican", he said in his earlier comments outside the White House. Kennedy was a more moderate conservative who sometimes sided with the court's four liberal justices.

Then, just as his confirmation seemed inevitable, 11th-hour allegations emerged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl while at high school and exposed himself to a female classmate at an alcohol-fueled dorm party at Yale University.

A petition to impeach Justice Kavanaugh has more than 150,000 signatures.

Nadler called the FBI investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh - which only lasted a week and was limited in scope - a "whitewash" investigation, according to the New York Times.

Kavanaugh has had busy days since he was confirmed Saturday.

The other eight justices were all in attendance for Monday's swearing-in, which was entirely ceremonial. It wasn't as entertaining as a question from Roberts, who described grasping some cash and asking his clerks to pull it from his hand as a kind of impromptu test of a criminal law definition.

Speaking after his swearing in, Judge Kavanaugh agreed that the process had been "contentious and emotional", adding: "That process is over". He helped to vet Roberts and Alito when Kavanaugh was working as a lawyer in the White House. One of the two cases the court is hearing Wednesday involves the detention of immigrants, an issue on which Kavanaugh's vote could be key.

Although he missed the court's first week, none of the six cases argued dealt with blockbuster issues. Kavanaugh could serve for decades in the lifetime job.

The justices privately made the decision to reject the appeals by an environmental group and companies that supported the regulation before Kavanaugh's confirmation, and announced the action on Tuesday. He'll also be the one to answer the door at those meetings if someone knocks to deliver something such as a justice's coffee or forgotten glasses. "The American public has seen this charade, has seen this dishonesty by the Democrats". Chief Justice John Roberts has previously said that assignment is a way of bringing a new justice "back down to Earth after the excitement of confirmation and appointment".
