Evacuations ordered as Florida braces for Hurricane Michael”

Michael was forecast to have the power to uproot trees, block roads and knock out power for days by the time it hits Florida on Wednesday.

In the small Panhandle city of Apalachicola, Mayor Van Johnson Sr. said the 2,300 residents are frantically preparing for a major hurricane strike that could be unlike any seen there in decades. It now has sustained winds of 85 miles-per-hour.

As of the 4pm CDT advisory Monday evening, Michael was a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

After striking Florida, Michael is forecast to move up the East Coast on Wednesday and Thursday tearing through the Carolinas, still recovering from Hurricane Florence last month.

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in 35 counties along the panhandle and Florida's Big Bend regions.

The National Hurricane center says the Florida Panhandle should prepare for life-threatening storm surge, destructive winds and heavy rainfall.

The heaviest rain will tend to fall in areas that were missed by Florence and focused from the Florida Panhandle to southwestern and central Georgia to part of central SC.

A hurricane warning was posted along more than 300 miles (483 km) of the coast from the Florida-Alabama border south to the Suwannee River.

"The threat for tornadoes will increase late tonight into Wednesday over parts of the Florida Panhandle, the northern Florida Peninsula, and southern Georgia", the hurricane center said. "It looks like another big one".

FEMA is already on Floridian ground, providing assistance in the form of the EPA, Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, Health and Human Services and the Army Corps of Engineers.

He has also activated hundreds of Florida National Guard members and waived tolls to encourage those near the coast to evacuate inland. It developed into a hurricane on Monday, and by today, more than 180,000 people were under mandatory evacuation orders.

Florida Fish and Wildlife has put 40 additional law enforcement officers on notice to deploy with a variety of special equipment, including boats that can be used for high-water rescues.

Storm surge warnings are also in place along the Florida and Alabama coasts. "Don't think that you can ride this out if you're in a low-lying area", Nelson said on CNN.

The declaration, requested by Scott, encompasses 35 counties and "will provide important resources and assistance from the federal government, including personnel, equipment and supplies, as well as making available funding sources for emergency protective measures", according to a news release from Scott's office.

Florida State University said its campuses in Tallahassee and Panama City will be closed from Tuesday to Friday. The storm was implicated in the deaths of 80 Floridians, according to the Associated Press - including residents at a nursing home.

For residents who want to leave, local authorities are stressing timely evacuation, too. A separate map shows Columbus could see rain totals between 2 and 3 inches from the storm.

Emergency officials in both counties and statewide are closely watching the hurricane.

"I just got a crew that came in that are staying also and they're in here helping me get everything buttoned up, tightened down, getting the food secure", Givens said.
