Freshly minted Justice Kavanaugh gets to work at US Supreme Court

Freshly minted Justice Kavanaugh gets to work at US Supreme Court”

Justice Kavanaugh rejected the accusations and Ms. Blasey Ford was unable to offer any witnesses who could corroborate her story; indeed those whom she named instead denied it. Trump, who was elected with a minority of the national popular vote, has appointed two Justices, Neil M. Gorsuch and now Kavanaugh, both of whom were confirmed by senators who represent a minority of the national population.

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress - predicted that Democrats would pay for their attempts to block the confirmation, especially during the lurid debate over decades-old sexual assault allegations.

As for the generic congressional ballot, the CNN poll found Democrats with a 13-point lead among likely voters, with 54% of respondents saying they would vote for the Democratic Party's candidate and 41% saying they planned to vote for the GOP nominee.

The new justice is widely expected to push the court further to the right as he is replacing Kennedy, a conservative who sometimes voted with the liberal justices on key social issues, including in pivotal cases on gay rights.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", he said at the ceremony in the ornate White House East Room.

Justice Kavanaugh was joined at the ceremony by his wife and two daughters.

During this historic Supreme Court justice swearing in-cum-Dem-smackdown, Trump said "In our country a man or a woman must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty" adding, "And with that, I must state that you sir, under historic, scrutiny were proven innocent".

Kavanaugh said at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday that "the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional". It was a disgraceful situation brought about by people who were evil.

United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was apologising on behalf of the whole country to his new conservative Supreme Court justice after one of the most contentious confirmation processes in USA history.

On Saturday, Nancy Pelosi announced she will file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to make public a confidential FBI investigation into the claims against Justice Kavanaugh.

All four of the law clerks Kavanaugh has hired this term are women, which is a first for a Supreme Court justice.

Justice Kavanaugh will be closely scrutinised from his first day on the bench.

Kavanaugh, Kimmel noted, was approved by the smallest margin of any Supreme Court Justice since 1881.

The other eight justices also were at the White House Monday.

But after being sworn in, Kavanaugh struck a markedly more conciliatory tone.

Other analysts said the court's reputation could suffer as it becomes perceived as a political, rather than a legal, institution.
