McConnell to AP: Gender gap hurts GOP but Kavanaugh helps

McConnell to AP: Gender gap hurts GOP but Kavanaugh helps”

"The other side did it", he told reporters after the swearing-in ceremony at the White House.

Before the arguments began, Chief Justice John Roberts welcomed Kavanaugh, 53, to a court that now has five conservative members and four liberals.

"From all the reporting and the sourcing that I'm getting, this is a moment in history where Brett Kavanaugh could actually ... may lose this nomination, may lose the confirmation ..." On Saturday evening, Kavanaugh took his oaths of office in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court while protesters chanted outside the court building.

"This is a really divided time", said Justice Elena Kagan, who addressed the current climate of the court at an event at Princeton University last week.

With justices seated by seniority, President Donald Trump's two appointees will flank the Supreme Court bench, Justice Neil Gorsuch at one end and Kavanaugh at the other.

But, he told the new justice, "You, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent". She voted to reward and embolden the Democrats' smear tactics, and if just a few more Republicans had voted with her, Kavanaugh's confirmation would have ended in defeat.

He claimed he was the first justice to have an all-female staff.

The letter goes into detail about the emotions felt during her testimony and her fight before ending with: "We will be grateful forever to you, Dr. Ford".

The bruising campaign to install Kavanaugh onto the court could leave a mark on his reputation and on public confidence in the institution, legal experts say. On the Supreme Court, I will seek to be a force for stability and unity.

He denied the allegations and in a blistering partisan attack during a Senate hearing on Sept 27, accused Democrats of an "orchestrated political hit".

The comments come after McConnell gave interviews over the weekend where he left open the possibility of confirming a Supreme Court nominee in 2020 if Republicans still control the chamber and there's a vacancy on the court, marking a shift over how he treated then-President Barack Obama's nominee in 2016.

And yet, it's quite plausible that installing a historically unpopular Supreme Court justice - whom most Americans regard as a sex offender - was, nonetheless, a political win for the GOP.

Alaska Sen. Murkowski was the only Republican who voted against advancing Kavanaugh's nomination to a full roll call, and she voted "present" on the final tally.

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Monday he was apologizing on behalf of the whole country to his new conservative Supreme Court justice after one of the most contentious confirmation processes in USA history.

Speaking before boarding the Marine One helicopter on the White House south lawn, Trump predicted the attack on Kavanaugh would cost the opposition party in next month's nationwide congressional elections.

An FBI report into sexual misconduct allegations made against Kavanaugh, has not been released to the public.

The day before the Kavanaugh vote, it received $40,000.
