9 dead in torrential flooding on Spain's Mallorca island”

Dramatic video footage on social media shows raging torrents of water gushing through the streets of the town, with reports that more than 20 centimetres of rain fell in just four hours.

"I took refuge on the roof of a neighbour's house where I stayed for awhile", he told AFP, adding that he watched as his vehicle was swept away by the current.

Five people are reported to have died in floods which hit the Spanish island of Majorca overnight.

Antonia Bauza, the deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc, confirmed two of the victims were British nationals.

The Britons, who were married and in their seventies, were travelling by taxi about 40 miles east of the Spanish island's capital, Palma, when the auto was swept away.

Trees were torn down as floodwaters swept many cars and trucks into piles of metal and streets were buried under mounds of mud.

Other victims were found in Arta and the coastal town of S'illot, where the overflowed creek reaches the sea.

"We are supporting the family of two British people following their deaths in Spain, and will do all we can to assist them at this deeply hard time", Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement.

"It all happened in less than 10 minutes", a witness told Spanish TV. An elderly woman's body was found in the basement of her house. "We had to swim to try to survive".

The world number one tennis player, who was born in Majorca, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and came to the island to help clean up the mess left by the torrential rain.

Emergency services in the Balearic archipelago tweeted that the death toll had risen to 10 and a little boy remained missing.

The regional government called an emergency meeting, and authorities said 630 rescue workers and military units had been sent to the area to help.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the disaster zone and described the situation as "absolutely extraordinary".

Tennis star Rafael Nadal, who hails from the worst hit area in Mallorca, has offered to open up his sports centre and tennis academy to people affected by the floods.
