Florida Governor To Declare State Of Emergency Ahead Of Possible Hurricane”

Hurricane conditions are expected within the next 12 hours, according to the NHC. The storm is moving to the due north at 7 miles per hour.

Hurricane Michael is located 140 miles east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico and is moving to the north at 7 mph (11 km/h).

The National Hurricane Center is predicting it will gain strength and become Tropical Storm Michael by tonight, and should head into the Gulf of Mexico late Monday.

Central Florida is expected to see up to 4 inches of rain in the coming days as Michael's outer bands whip the region.

"This storm will be life-threatening and extremely unsafe", Scott said in a briefing Sunday.

Michael, which formed near the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, is expected to dump 4 to 8 inches of rain - and as much as 12 inches in some areas - on western Cuba before it hits the United States. Officials also alerted residents living on the coast of the possibility of flooding caused by the storm. The storm went from 40 mph on Sunday to 75 mph on Monday and is expected to undergo rapid intensification again in the next 24 hours. While forecast models broadly expect the storm to reach hurricane strength, models have varied views on the storm's forward speed, meaning there is still uncertainty about when it might reach the USA coast.

Michael is expected to become a hurricane late Monday or early Tuesday, according to the center.

The governor warned that there is potential for "devastating impact to communities across the Panhandle and Big Bend". The North Carolina division of emergency management stated Sunday that the forecast calls for 3 to 5 inches of rain over the next seven days across parts of southeastern North Carolina.

As of Sunday evening, Storm Michael, packing winds of 60 miles per hour, was moving north at 5 miles per hour just east of Cozumel, a Mexican island in the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center reported.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued from the Alabama-Florida border eastward to the Suwannee River.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center of the tropical cyclone and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). Delta's waiver allows customers ticketed to five Gulf Coast airports in Florida and Alabama to make one fee-free change - with some fine print - if they're ticketed to travel on Tuesday or Wednesday.
