Google shutting down social network Google+ after security bug disclosed

Google shutting down social network Google+ after security bug disclosed”

According to an internal memo viewed by the Wall Street Journal, Google feared disclosing the issue would be detrimental to its reputation and draw unwanted regulatory attention. A bug in the API could have allowed outside developers to access the data of 496,951 users who had only opted to share their private profile data with friends. "None of these thresholds were met here".

The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous individuals, reports that Google deliberately avoided disclosing the problem at the time, in part to avoid drawing regulatory scrutiny. Also, Smith is adamant Project Strobe found "no evidence" this bug was abused or even that the developers using the API were aware it existed.

The affected data is limited to static, optional Google+ Profile fields including name, email address, occupation, gender and age, Google said.

Google says that like other tech companies, it has encouraged third-party developers to "build on top of our various services". This news comes in the wake of a previously undisclosed security flaw that exposed the data of the profile of users.

Although the Google+ breach was on a much smaller scale, it appears that staff were anxious about the possibility of Google being swept up in the tsunami of bad press that engulfed Facebook, which ultimately wiped $US60 billion off the social network's value.

Companies have to inform a supervisory authority within 72 hours of a personal data breach under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) - unless the breach is not likely to risk the rights and freedom of affected users.

Besides low usage, Google+ engagement rates are also defeating, with 90-percent of all sessions lasting for under five seconds, according to Alphabet's subsidiary. A spokeswoman for Google didn't immediately return a request for further comment. Our review showed that Google+ is better suited as an enterprise product where co-workers can engage in internal discussions on a secure corporate social network. Google is also following from its limiting of Gmail scans by limiting which applications - namely, down to email apps - can do so. The now defunct Google + left user data exposed for at least three years.

Google followed suit, letting outside developers access some Google+ data with users' permission.
