Hurricane Michael is a storm to watch in Atlantic Canada

Hurricane Michael is a storm to watch in Atlantic Canada”

The speed of the storm barreling toward the Florida Panhandle - Michael was moving north-northwest at 12 miles per hour (19 kph) - was among the hazards worrying forecasters at the National Hurricane Center on Tuesday morning.

Hurricane Michael is a Category 4 storm approaching the Florida Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center has enacted hurricane, tropical storm and storm surge warnings for more than 300 miles of the Florida coast.

Each line is a different forecast model projection for the track of Michael later this week.

Roads were filled with piles of floating debris. Significant wind and rain are still expected.

NOAA's National Hurricane Center or NHC noted on October 9 that life-threatening storm surge, hurricane force winds and heavy rainfall can be expected along the northeastern gulf coast as Michael continues to move toward landfall.

Scott, after getting a briefing at 8 a.m.at the State Emergency Operations Center, urged people who plan to evacuate to do so Tuesday morning, as he continued to expand the activation of the Florida National Guard in advance of Michael's landfall.

Hurricane-force winds extend about 45 miles from the center, with tropical storm-force winds reaching 175 miles, the NHC said.

"The storm surge is absolutely deadly".

After daylight Thursday residents of north Florida would just be beginning to take stock of the enormity of the disaster. Michael was more intense at landfall than hurricanes Andrew, Katrina and Maria.

Smith, in Gadsden County, said the situation was unsafe even for emergency personnel.

"We've been through this before", she said.

Smith could not provide details on the victim.

State Emergency Management Director Wes Maul, in talking to his staff a few minutes after Scott's news conference, expressed concern that county shelters have had to quickly set up because Michael formed in a short period of time over the weekend.

Previous year saw a string of catastrophic storms batter the western Atlantic - including Irma, Maria and Hurricane Harvey - causing a record-equaling $125 billion in damage when it flooded the Houston metropolitan area.

"Where that becomes a factor is with the evacuation of some of the local populations", he said.

"If you don't follow warnings from officials this storm could kill you", said Scott, a Republican running for the U.S. Senate in November's congressional elections.

If Hurricane Michael makes landfall as a Category 4 storm, it would be the strongest hurricane to hit the Florida Panhandle in recorded history, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Dr. Phil Klotzbach.

The speed of the storm - Michael was moving north 12 mph (19 kph) - gave people a dwindling number of hours to prepare or flee before being caught in damaging wind and rain.

Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate in Wakulla, Gulf and Bay counties. For a depiction of areas at risk, please see the National Weather Service Storm Surge Watch/Warning Graphic, available at hurricanes.gov.

As Hurricane Michael spins in the Gulf of Mexico, colleges in its projected path are closing campuses. "Take care of them", he said. "The historical record, going back to 1851, finds no Category 4 hurricane ever hitting the Florida panhandle". President Donald Trump has endorsed DeSantis.

A hurricane warning was in place from the Okaloosa/Walton county line to the Suwannee River and a tropical storm warning was in effect for north of Fernandina Beach, Fla., to Duck, N.C., and Pamlico and Albemarle sounds.

The Carolinas are still recovering from Hurricane Florence, which left dozens dead and is estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damage last month.
