Microsoft Rumoured to be Buying Fallout: New Vegas Developer Obsidian”

Microsoft is close to acquiring "Pillars of Eternity" studio Obsidian Entertainment, according to a report by Kotaku. A source speaking to the video-game website stated that the deal was "90%" done.

Neither Microsoft nor Obsidian are commenting about the potential acquisition at this time. Clearly, this would provide the studio with some stability and heaps of resources from one of the "Big 3".

"While it is our policy not to comment on rumors or speculation, we look forward to publishing the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, and remain confident in the team there to deliver an outstanding game", said a representative for Private Division to Kotaku. As mentioned above, Sony clearly is on the winning side when it comes to better titles on their platform, but what if Microsoft can swing the market with some strong RPG releases? A much more serious statement came from a Microsoft spokesperson, saying that "We do not comment on rumors or speculation".

Obsidian Entertainment has been in operation since 2003 and rose out of the ashes of Black Isle Studios, a company that had been involved in both the Fallout and Baldur's Gate series.

Microsoft has kept Minecraft multiplatform, even enabling cross-play between Switch and Xbox One players, but console makers usually buy studios with the intent for those studios to make games for their consoles, not the competition. Microsoft executive vice president of gaming and head of Xbox Phil Spencer told CNET in August the company isn't done beefing up its portfolio just yet.
