Monstrous Hurricane Michael tears into Florida

Monstrous Hurricane Michael tears into Florida”

Hurricane Michael roared ashore in Florida on Wednesday, flooding homes and streets and toppling trees and power lines in the Gulf of Mexico beachfront town where it made landfall as a raging Category 4 storm.

Hurricane Michael, a category 4 storm, slammed into the Sunshine State, bringing winds over 150 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center said Michael would pass through the Carolinas as a tropical storm on Thursday, dumping as much as 8 inches of rain in some areas.

The storm continued on its destructive path, bringing heavy rains and tearing down trees. Water seeped into her fourth floor apartment When she dared to look outside, water levels were grazing the fronds of tall palm trees on the beach. An eight-foot storm surge inundated neighborhoods, covering some homes to the rooftop.

"I'm anxious about my daughter and grandbaby".

"It's going to be frightful", Thomas told CNN.

"Going back through records to 1851 we can't find another Cat 4 in this area, so this is unfortunately a historical and incredibly risky and life-threatening situation", he said.

An AccuWeather meteorologist captured Hurricane Michael's intense eye wall on the east side of Panama City Beach.

Wind gusts blew out windows in homes and office buildings, including the First Federal Bank.

Images and video from the area showed stores and entire shopping centers that were turned into piles of rubble.

Past year saw a string of catastrophic storms batter the western Atlantic - including Irma, Maria and Harvey, which caused a record-equaling $125 billion (USD) in damage when it flooded the Houston metropolitan area.

Damage in Panama City was extensive, with broken and uprooted trees and power lines down almost everywhere.

Helen Neal, 88, and her husband, J.W. Neal, 87, preferred to take their chances in a hotel rather than in their two-story beachfront house about a mile away in Panama City.

Roads were flooded, trees uprooted and homes were destroyed after the "monstrous" storm ploughed into Mexico Beach at just before 2pm local time and swept across the state.

A hurricane warning remains in place from the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River in Florida.

He said the storm would still have hurricane-force winds as it pushed through Florida into Georgia, and tropical storm-force winds when it reaches the Carolinas, which are still reeling from post-Florence flooding.

More than 5,000 evacuees sought shelter in Tallahassee, which is about 40km from the coast but is covered by live oak and pine trees that can fall and cause power outages even in smaller storms.

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for all of Florida, freeing up federal assistance to supplement state and local disaster responses.

National Hurricane Center Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen added: "We are in new territory". But without extensive study, they can not directly link a single weather event to the changing climate. Hurricanes form over the Atlantic and North Pacific oceans and cause most damage to the Americas while typhoons form in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, impacting Asia. According to the US Energy Information Administration. There's evidence of higher sea surface temperature and atmospheric moisture, experts say.
