New Space Station Crew Launches Thursday”

NASA astronaut Hague and Roscosmos' cosmnonaut Ovchinin lifted off as scheduled at 4:40 a.m. EDT Thursday from the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

NASA has confirmed both astronauts are in good condition, while a Russian news agency said neither of the men required any immediate medical help.

The rocket was carrying a Russian cosmonaut and an American astronaut who had set off for a six-month mission at the International Space Station, on a relatively rare two-man launch.

"Shortly after launch, there was an issue with the booster". Their Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft will arrive at the space station after a quick, 6-hour or "fast track" rendezvous rather than the traditional, two-day route. Search and rescue crews are heading to the landing site.

"The launch had a problem with the booster (rocket) a few seconds after the first stage separation and we can confirm now that the crew has started to go into ballistic descent mode", the voice-over on a Nasa live-stream from mission control in Houston said. The current Soyuz on the ISS, Soyus MS-09, launched in June and has an orbital lifetime of about 200 days.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have sunk to post-Cold War lows over the crisis in Ukraine, the war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential vote, but Russia and the U.S. have maintained cooperation in space.
