One dead as Hurricane Michael tears into Florida

One dead as Hurricane Michael tears into Florida”

That is rarefied air: only three storms have hit the U.S.at Category 5: an unnamed storm that devastated the Florida Keys in 1935; Camille, which hit MS in 1969; and Andrew, which plowed across South Florida in 1992.

It was the most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland in almost 50 years and the most powerful in recorded history to strike the Florida Panhandle. The hurricane is forecast to hit the Florida Panhandle at a possible category 4 storm.

- Lingering Tropical Storm Leslie became a hurricane again late Tuesday and remained a minimal hurricane early Wednesday with maximum winds of 75 miles per hour.

The Gadsden County Sheriff's office said that a man was found dead in his home in a small town outside of Tallahassee after a tree crashed through the roof.

It appeared to be so powerful that it was expected to remain a hurricane as it moved into Alabama and Georgia early Thursday.

By 8pm, Michael was weakened to category-1 storm, with wind gusts reaching 90mph (144kph), the National Hurricane Center reported. Hours earlier, it made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near Mexico Beach, Florida.

"We are in new territory", National Hurricane Centre Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen wrote on Facebook.

"It really started as a tropical storm, and then it went to Category 1, then it was Category 2 and before you know it, it was Category 4", O'Shaughnessy said.

The St. Marks River overflows into the city of St. Marks, Fla., Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland, behind the unnamed Labour Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969.

Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia issued an emergency declaration for 92 counties in the southern part of that state. Only the 1935 storm and Camille had lower pressures, Mr. Klotzbach said.

The storm continued on its destructive path, bringing heavy rains and tearing down trees. Some of those areas are still working to recover from Hurricane Florence. Beachfront structures could be seen collapsing and metal roofing materials were blown away amid the heavy rain. It forced more than 375,000 people up and down the Gulf Coast to evacuate as it gained strength quickly while crossing the eastern Gulf of Mexico toward north Florida.

Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday with potentially catastrophic winds of 155 miles per hour, the most powerful hurricane to hit the US mainland in almost 50 years.

Hurricane-force winds extended up to 45 miles (75 kilometers) from Michael's center.

Michael is the strongest hurricane in terms of wind speed to strike the US mainland since Hurricane Andrew.

Central pressure is the measure of how much the atmosphere in the middle of a storm weighs. The hurricane hit the Florida Panhandle as a category 4 storm.

Warm water is like jet fuel for hurricanes, and a combination of balmy conditions in the Gulf of Mexico, a lack of disturbance from wind shear and rapid intensification near the coast turned Michael into a historic storm, according to hurricane experts.

The Weather Channel warns of "catastrophic storm surge" and incredibly high speed winds associated with the storm.
