Order for Khashoggi’s murder came from the top say Turkish officials

Order for Khashoggi’s murder came from the top say Turkish officials”

The Saudi-born Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi has been missing for over a week-with reports strongly indicating he was murdered last week by a "hit team" sent by the government of Saudi Arabia while inside the country's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey-but critics from across the political spectrum say the Trump administration still has not used its close ties to the ruling Royal Family, and especially with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Sulman (MbS), to get anywhere nearer the truth of what happened to Khashoggi or hold the Saudis feet to the fire over the possible assassination of a US resident and journalist.

In a Fox News interview, Trump said us investigators were working with both Ankara and Riyadh to probe the suspicious disappearance in Turkey of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

He declined to comment on Khashoggi's possible fate, but said "we can not let this happen; to reporters, to anybody".

Trump on Thursday said: "We're being very tough".

U.S. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul on Wednesday demanded a halt in military support to Saudi Arabia until a Saudi journalist who disappeared in the Consulate in Istanbul was "returned alive".

The US State Department has said it has no information about Mr Khashoggi's whereabouts.

In an interview later Wednesday with "Fox News @ Night", Trump said he wanted to find out what happened to Khashoggi but appeared reluctant to consider blocking arms sales, citing economic reasons. "And we want do get to the bottom of it", the U.S. president said.

The outcry from lawmakers of both parties, including Republican allies of Trump, foreign policy analysts, former US officials and leading media commentators who knew Khashoggi, has intensified pressure on the White House to take a hard line.

Khashoggi, 59, was reportedly killed within two hours of arriving at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

Trump said Khashoggi's fiancée had sent him a letter and may come to the White House soon.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday evening that USA intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Mr Khashoggi.

Khashoggi had fled his homeland in September previous year and had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States, where he had applied for USA citizenship, Cengiz said.

The identity and the roles that most or all of them held in the Saudi government or security services are now known to the Turkish officials.

The issue threatened the strong relationship the Trump administration has constructed with Mohammed Bin Salman.

The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Canberra did not respond to written questions.

Steve Doocy noted the Washington Post has reported that Mohammed ordered the operation to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia.

A combo of frame grabs created on October 10, 2018 and taken off a police CCTV video allegedly shows members of a group of Saudi citizens that Turkish police suspect of being involved in Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance, October 2, 2018.

On his first worldwide trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales. Turkish officials quoted in media have said he was killed but Riyadh denies that. We have a country that's doing probably better economically than it's ever done before.

He continued: "Part of that is what we're doing with our defense systems and everybody's wanting them".

Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, acknowledged the case - if Saudi responsibility is confirmed - could complicate the US strategy to contain Iran, in its bid to gain influence throughout the Middle East. The administration's Middle East agenda heavily depends on the Saudis, including efforts to counter Iranian influence in the region, fight extremism and build support for its yet-to-be-released plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
