Rescues, damage in Florida after hurricane — WHAT’S HAPPENING

Rescues, damage in Florida after hurricane — WHAT’S HAPPENING”

It devastated Florida's Panhandle region, leaving much of the area in ruins.

Michael, which Scott called "monstrous", made landfall with wind speeds that were almost the highest possible for a Category 4 - 155 miles per hour.

Long said several hospitals in the Panhandle were hit by the hurricane and patients had to be evacuated.

"Today is the day".

Tens of thousands of people were told to evacuate the coastal areas in nine counties as the storm approached with winds of 155kmh. The National Guard entered Mexico Beach on Wednesday night and found 20 people who had remained in the town through the storm, the governor said. "We haven t seen as robust of an evacuation response from the civilian population that we have seen in other storms".

The NHC warns that some regions of Florida may experience storm surges of up to 13ft (4m). "Hurricane Michael is forecasted to be the most destructive storm to hit the Florida Panhandle in decades". "This is going to have structure damaging winds along the coast and hurricane force winds inland".

On its current track, the core of Michael is expected to move northeastward across the southeastern USA on Wednesday night and Thursday, and then move off the Mid-Atlantic coast away from the United States on Friday.

President Trump has approved Florida's declaration of emergency. Whether we gain weight or lose it, he said, "no change makes your clothes fit better".

The governor pleaded with people in Florida not to go home yet.

The top priority over the next few days is search and rescue, authorities said.

Michael hit the Florida pan handle Wednesday, Oct. 10., at about 12:30 p.m.in Mexico Beach with 155 miles per hour winds.

"The shear was high, so nobody expected it was going to intensify this rapidly", Jiang said.

"The storm surge is absolutely deadly".

"Don't think that you can ride this out if you're in a low-lying area", Nelson said on CNN.

ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee said the ruins in Mexico Beach were "eerily reminiscent to the scene I saw in Gulfport [Louisiana] in 2005" after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Gov. Rick Scott called the destruction from Wednesday's storm "unimaginable", as "homes are gone, businesses are gone".

Smith, in Gadsden County, said the situation was risky even for emergency personnel. You can not hide from this storm. "On the forecast track, the center of Michael will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through tonight".

Florida Fish and Wildlife has put 40 additional law enforcement officers on notice to deploy with a variety of special equipment, including boats that can be used for high-water rescues.

Michael, the third most powerful storm ever to strike the USA mainland, weakened into a tropical storm over SC.

Michael is a reminder that the biggest threat to Tampa Bay and the West-Coast of Florida is a Western Caribbean system forming late (or early) in the season and quickly jumping up our way. NPR's Emily Sullivan reports state and local governments are preparing for torrential downpours.

He said strong winds picked up a portable carport Wednesday and dropped it down on the roof.

Trump previously said he intends to visit affected areas on Sunday or Monday. He's committed to providing any federal resources Florida may need. The storm has since been downgraded to a tropical storm. The storm is expected to make landfall by early afternoon.

"Water will come miles in shore and could easily rise over the roofs of houses", he said.

Scott said there is not yet an estimate on how much the storm caused in damages. David Peaton is the deputy director of emergency management in Levy County, which faces the Gulf of Mexico. "You couldn't see anything anywhere". You have rain. You have wind. Influences on the formation, direction and strength of hurricanes can involve faraway events like dry air from Saharan dust storms, the heated waters of El Niño in the Pacific, the undulations of the jet stream.
