What West Virginia Swing Voters Think About Manchin's Kavanaugh Vote (HBO)”

Susan Collins was the sole Republican to vote for the measure, put forth by Democrats. Trump used the ceremony as a platform to decry the "campaign of political and personal destruction" waged against Kavanaugh.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican who voted against her party to protect the Affordable Care Act in 2017, told CNN that she would not be supporting Baldwin's resolution.

The vote was also aimed at refocusing people away from the Senate's nasty battle over confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, which both sides say has transformed indifferent conservative voters into motivated ones - for now. She never did. I knew that a long time ago.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the bad pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", Trump said at the start of a ceremonial swearing-in in the East Room of the White House on Monday.

The 76-year-old McConnell, who's been in the Senate since 1985 and majority leader since 2015, said he wants more women in the Senate and on the Judiciary Committee in particular. Trump has said Alaskans will make her pay.

Within a half hour of the start of his first oral argument on the Supreme Court Tuesday, Kavanaugh had already proved he wouldn't be a silent presence on the bench like Justice Clarence Thomas, who went through a similarly bruising confirmation process in 1991 but was famously quiet during questioning.

But by pushing ahead, Democrats made Republicans cast a health care vote that Democrats could wield in campaign ads for next month's midterm elections, in which they hope to topple the GOP's 51-49 Senate majority.

While the president certainly bashed the senator for her vote, some of her colleagues in the Republican Party have said that Murkowski, like any other senator, had the right to believe - and vote - the way she chooses.

"Trump called the protests "phony stuff" and even gave a special shout-out to the FBI's so-called investigation of Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault accusation against Kavanaugh", he said, adding, "Wait, is this the same FBI that's doing the 'witch hunt?' Because I thought they were... oh, never mind, nothing means anything anymore". Progressives fought hard against Kavanaugh's confirmation due to his originalist jurisprudence and because he would replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, often viewed as a "swing" vote in many 5-4 decisions. "Nobody's going to beat her", he said. But he says the controversy over Kavanaugh could end up helping Republicans by generating more enthusiasm among GOP voters who feel he was mistreated. Dianne Feinstein, whom the president accused of leaking a private letter from Ford, the California professor who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were teens.

He said his approval rating has nearly doubled since the Kavanaugh confirmation.
