Africa's youngest billionaire Mohammed Dewji abducted

Africa's youngest billionaire Mohammed Dewji abducted”

A Tanzanian businessman and former member of parliament for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party (CCM) was seized by unidentified men in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, the regional commissioner said.

They drove into the hotel and opened fire before bundling Dewji into a auto and speeding off, said Dar es Salaam regional police commissioner Lazaro Mambosaso.

The armed men were foreigners, the Swahili Times reported on Twitter, citing Police Commander Lazaro Mambosasa.

Police have launched a manhunt into circumstances that led to the abduction of Mr Dewji who ranks as one of the richest Tanzanians at Colosseum Hotel as he walked into a gym.

Dewji, 43, was elected to parliament on the CCM ticket but did not seek re-election for his seat in the 2015 election.

Dewji was the first Tanzanian to be featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine in 2013 and has been featured on three separate occasions.

The kidnappers fired shots in the air before driving away with the billionaire, eyewitnesses said.

According to eyewitnesses, unknown men arrived in two vehicles and parked at the hotel before Mr Dewji got there.

Mr Dewji, locally known as Mo, is credited with turning his family business from a wholesale and retail enterprise into a multi-billion dollar pan-African conglomerate.

Dewji is also the main shareholder in Simba football club, based in Dar es Salaam.

Mr Dewji is ranked 17th by Forbes on its list of Africa's billionaires. According to Forbes, the billionaire signed the Giving Pledge in 2016, promising to donate at least half his fortune to philanthropic causes.
