Huawei releases new AI chips aimed at competing with NVIDIA & Qualcomm

Huawei releases new AI chips aimed at competing with NVIDIA & Qualcomm”

China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world's largest telecom-equipment maker, unveiled an AI chip on Wednesday that will power its servers, in a push to boost its nascent cloud-computing business.

"Our full-stack portfolio includes chips, chip enablement, a training and inference framework and application enablement", he said. It predicts that by 2025, there will be at least 40 billion personal smart devices globally and 90 per cent of smart device users will have a digital assistant.

"As Huawei does not sell chips directly to third-party companies, if you're talking about pure chip-vendors, there is never competition between Huawei and them".

The two new chips come after Huawei's Kirin 970, released in 2017, and Kirin 980, which is set to be released this year and will be integrated within its Huawei Mate 20, also set to be released later this year.

The chips and AI strategy were unveiled at the Huawei Connect 2018 conference, which opened at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre on Wednesday. The Ascend 910 has the "greatest computing density in a single chip", making it far speedier than rival products from Nvidia and Google, according to Eric Xu, Huawei's rotating chairman.

"We provide hardware and cloud computing service".

Huawei's AI portfolio includes its AI chips, Ascend 310 and Ascend 910, and Compute Architecture for Neural Networks, which is an automated development toolkit.

Its 7 nanometer Ascend 910 chipset, which the firm claims is twice as powerful as its nearest competitor Nvidia's v100, will be available from the second quarter of 2019. "There are clear signs that AI will change or disrupt a whole host of industries".

Huawei has been banned from selling telecoms equipment in the U.S. for several years on security concerns as the American authorities allege that its technology can be used to spy on customers.

"AI will help us to find more efficient solutions to problems we already know how to fix".

Huawei's AI strategy has multiple key focus areas, including investment in AI research, development of open ecosystem/talent, and driving operational efficiency. In the consumer market, HiAI will infuse intelligence into consumer devices, making them smarter than ever.

Xu also announced Huawei's full-stack portfolio of AI products and cloud services. And that there are enough data scientists and subject matter experts to make it all add up to real business value.
