US Lawmakers Call on Trump to Help Detained Muslims in Xinjiang”

China's far-western Xinjiang region has inserted into its anti-extremism regulations new clauses that prescribe the use of "vocational training centres" to "educate and transform" people influenced by extremist ideology.

But the government of the world's most populous nation has come in for criticism on multiple fronts, including the United Nations, which in August decried as "deeply disturbing" recent allegations of large-scale arbitrary detentions of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities.

China has come under increasing pressure from the USA and the European Union after a United Nations panel confronted Chinese diplomats in August over reports of arbitrary mass detentions and harsh security measures aimed at Muslims.

James Leibold, a China specialist at La Trobe University, said global condemnation has "embarrassed" Beijing, but authorities had no intention of heeding calls to allow independent human rights monitors into the autonomous region to assess the situation, instead moving detainees in secret.

The U.N. got what it called credible reports that Chinese authorities were putting Uighurs into internment and re-education camps for long periods of time without criminal charges.

These "re-education" camps have been the subject of increasing worldwide criticism in recent months as 1 million people are reportedly interned in them for what Xinjiang calls "thought transformation" to combat extremism.

"Without due process, Xinjiang's political education centers remain arbitrary and abusive", Wang said.

"Human rights conditions have deteriorated again this year, and that has adversely affected both US-China relations and the people of China's ability to exercise their fundamental human freedoms", Rubio added.

The congressional commission also warned in an annual report on October 10 of the "long arm" of an "ascendant and increasingly aggressive" China. It says the ruling party is "trying to redefine" human rights and "basic human dignity".

The region's anti-extremism laws have been in force since April previous year, and also ban Muslim men and women from growing "abnormal" beards or wearing veils in public.

China is also launching a wider campaign against Islamic practices across Xinjiang.

The Urumqi Communist Party leaders also said they would require government officials and party members to firmly believe in Marxism-Leninism, and not religion, and to speak standard Mandarin Chinese in public. "Because the West has failed in doing so, in dealing with religious Islamic extremism". "I must fly the flag high and battle [the] "pan-halal trend" to the end, resolute in my beliefs, even to death!" the oath reads.

The European Union expressed similar concern about Xinjiang last week. "As American policymakers revisit the assumptions that previously informed U.S".

These efforts "have merit on their own accord, and they are also inextricably linked to vital US national interests, including regional stability in the Indo-Pacific, the future of young and emerging democracies in our hemisphere, and the strength of our own civic institutions domestically".
