Border issue holds up Brexit deal in Brussels talks

Border issue holds up Brexit deal in Brussels talks”

"With several big issues still to resolve, including the Northern Ireland backstop, it was jointly agreed that face-to-face talks were necessary ahead of this week's October European Council", a United Kingdom government spokesperson said.

With the former Brexit secretary David Davis calling for rebellion and the possibility of more cabinet resignations, May needs the DUP's 10 votes to prop up her government more than ever.

David Davis, who quit as Brexit secretary in July over May's broad blueprint, wrote in The Sunday Times newspaper that her plans were "completely unacceptable" and urged ministers to "exert their collective authority" this week.

The final details of a deal to include Gibraltar in the UK's withdrawal agreement and transitional arrangements will be hammered out in crunch talks in Brussels tonight.

Earlier on Sunday, Brexit negotiators failed to seal a deal on Britain's divorce terms, European Union officials said, after a flurry of meetings in Brussels to try to move the talks forward before British Prime Minister Theresa May arrives for a summit later this week.

In a strongly-worded article in the Belfast Telegraph, Mrs Foster warned against the EU's backstop proposal and also stressed that she would not accept any measure that resulted in extra checks for goods travelling between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

At least three Brexit-supporting Cabinet ministers are understood to be considering resigning in protest if May capitulates to European Union demands on the time-limit, the Telegraph reported.

"This is one of the most fundamental decisions that the government has taken in modern times. The public does not like it. Parliament will not vote for it", he wrote.

The issue of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which will become the UK's border with the European Union, is one of the last remaining obstacles to achieving a divorce deal with Brussels.

Lobbying of May from all sides has increased in recent weeks as London and Brussels edge closer to an agreement on a draft withdrawal treaty to cover the divorce terms, a transition period and a solution for Northern Ireland.

Theresa May will not demand an "end date" be written into any backstop arrangement struck with Brussels a key Cabinet minister admitted on Sunday.

The unscheduled talks in Brussels came amid speculation officials working on the negotiations had reached a deal.

"There are different ways to ensure that something is time limited".

The British prime minister, who relies on support from a tiny Northern Irish group - the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) - for her parliamentary majority, faces strong resistance from the DUP to any deal that leaves the territory under the EU's jurisdiction.

She is thought to be trying to break the deadlock by proposing a new "backstop" arrangement for the Irish border.

Mrs May's hopes of getting a Brexit deal through Parliament could depend on the actions of Labour MPs, with former minister Caroline Flint telling Sky she would back a "reasonable" deal.

Davis' words were clearly targeted at several Brexit supporters in May's cabinet of top ministers after there were reports that some were considering their position after being updated on the state of the Brexit talks.
