Searchers find body in hurricane-stricken town

Searchers find body in hurricane-stricken town”

A member of the South Florida Search and Rescue team searches for survivors in the destruction left after Hurricane Michael passed through the area on Thursday in Mexico Beach, Florida.

Residents and rescue workers in Florida and other southeastern USA states are digging through the devastation inflicted by Hurricane Michael, the remnants of which have moved out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Michael made landfall on Wednesday afternoon as a Category 4 storm, the most powerful to hit Florida's northwestern Panhandle in more than a century.

A K9 rescue team discovered the remains of a missing Charlotte County woman Saturday morning, increasing the death toll from Tropical Storm Michael to six in Virginia, according to state police.

How high it might go was unclear.

Relatives of people who defied evacuation orders in Mexico Beach, a town where the storm obliterated shorefront neighborhoods, also posted messages on the Facebook pages of law enforcement pleading for help finding relatives.

The state, wanting to reduce its exposure, for most of the last 20 years has been enticing smaller, niche companies into the market but required them to obtain re-insurance.

"Our thoughts turn again towards the southeastern United States, as towns and cities in northwest Florida have suffered large-scale, catastrophic damage at the hands of Hurricane Michael", they said.

Authorities have set up distribution centers to dole out food and water to victims, who just were coming to grips with the brutal realities of their situation.

How many others were not so fortunate was still not clear.

"I didn't recognise nothing. But we've got to get this job done here first". But he said maintenance issues delayed leaving port and by the time crews had cobbled together the necessary fixes “the hurricane was too close for us to run away from it.”.

On Saturday, rescue crews heard cries for help and crowbarred into a mobile home crumpled by the storm in Panama City, freeing a mother and daughter, both diabetics who had been trapped in a closet without insulin for two days and were on the verge of diabetic shock, rescuers said.

"Everybody we knew lost their house".

The Coast Guard said it rescued 129 people.

HECTOR RETAMAL

Beyond Florida, five storm-related deaths were reported in Virginia - including that of a fireman whose firetruck was struck by a semitrailer truck.

"We are not completely done. To that end, we're still here in Tallahassee and not able to get back on the trail yet".

Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long said he expected the death toll to rise, and will survey storm damage on Sunday with Scott.

Mr. Long said he worries about "hurricane amnesia" and called for rebuilding to be done "in a resilient fashion".

"It's like a war zone", he said while touring the town of 1,000 people on the Gulf of Mexico. Numerous 600 families who live there had followed orders to pack what they could in a single suitcase as they were evacuated before the storm. The hurricane eyewall passed directly overhead, severely damaging almost every building.

The primary school, the flight line, the marina and the runways were devastated.

"I will not recall you and your families until we can guarantee your safety".

Communications outages and roads blocked by downed trees, strewn power lines and debris made it hard to get an overall assessment of the damage wrought by Michael, but the initial picture was grim. "My job is to keep our community safe and ensure Tallahassee recovers as quickly and fully as possible".

Still, some 110,000 Tallahassee residents lost power at some point.

Large restoration efforts narrowed traffic down to a single lane on some major streets, such as Thomasville Road, but the inconveniences didn't seem to bother residents Terry and Katia Coonan. "We're doing what we can with the minimal media that we have".

The campground had been full just before Michael blew in and covered it in 2 feet (61 cm) of debris and seaweed, McMillan said.

"Terry Coonan added", We're counting our blessings".

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum spent much of the day surveying damaged areas.
