Elliott wins NASCAR playoff race at Dover - 10/7/2018 4:54:53 PM”

Chase Elliott pulled away to win in overtime Sunday at Dover (Delaware) International Speedway for an automatic berth into the next round of the NASCAR Cup playoffs. Practice was delayed and eventually cancelled due to weather.

Following a dominating performance in Sunday's Gander Outdoors 400, Harvick had a pit gun malfunction cost himself and the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing the lead late in the 404-lapper. The No. 10 auto came out behind two cars that took only two tires on the stop and three cars that stayed out, leaving him in sixth on the Lap 397 restart. Almirola rolled home in 13th place and fell into a tie for ninth in the standings with Bowyer.

The race ended in overtime after a multi-car crash on lap 398 damaged the cars of several of the leaders.

"We've had so many opportunities and been so close and had the vehicle to win and been in position, and I don't know, it just seems to not come through", a disconsolate Almirola said after the race. I'm frustrated and mad and angry.

Joey Logano dodged the Almirola wreck and finished third, followed by Erik Jones, Kurt Busch and Harvick.

Late race problems also robbed two of his playoff entrant teammates of shots at the victory. "But we're going to have to be right in the middle of it, too". The Dawsonville, Ga. native led only 11 of the race's 400 laps but remained within striking distance throughout the entire race. Elliott was passed by victor Kyle Busch with two laps left in the race and fell to 0 for 70 in his career.

They were not the only playoff drivers who had trouble at Dover.

"We've had so many opportunities and been so close and had the vehicle to win and been in position and I don't know, it just seems to not come through", Almirola said.

Kevin Harvick has swept the first two stages of the NASCAR playoff race at Dover. But that was little consolation after Sunday's disappointment.

"We've had so many opportunities and been so close and had the vehicle to win and been in position and I don't know, it just seems to not come through", Almirola said. The other came on the Watkins Glen road course. - #17, Roush Fenway Racing, Ford - [21st (+2)] 20th - Paul Menard - #21, Wood Brothers Racing, Ford - [20th (0)] 21st - Jamie McMurray - #1, Chip Ganassi Racing, Chevrolet - [18th (-3)] 22nd - William Byron - #24, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet - [23rd (+1)] 23rd - A.J. A series of quick repairs allowed Johnson to return to the track, but the 11-time Dover victor rejoined the race 10 laps down before finishing 36th. At the same time, Johnson would have been in and Larson would have been eliminated by one point if it had not been for Larson making a last-lap pass near the finish line to gain the additional spot to force a tiebreaker.

Truex's crew chief, Cole Pearn, suggested that Johnson could atone for the Charlotte wreck by giving Truex's crew road bikes, so Johnson went shopping, bought a trove of girls' bicycles and placed them on the No. 78 hauler before the crew arrived.
