Saudi king engages with Turkey, US to de-escalate Khashoggi crisis”

President Trump has dispatched his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Saudi Arabia to look into the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey more than two weeks ago, prompting fears that he may have been killed inside the diplomatic post. "And incidentally in this whole case of Khashoggi, [Turkish President Recep] Erdogan doesn't come into this case with what we used to say 'clean hands.' He has a bad human rights record".

The renowned journalist has not been seen since entering the building nearly two weeks ago.

Exerting downward pressure on prices, Friday's monthly report from the International Energy Agency said the market looked "adequately supplied for now" and cut its forecasts for world oil demand growth this year and next.

Pelosi then questioned whether Trump put personal profit ahead of country in the case of Khashoggi - whom the Saudis are reportedly about to admit was killed in a botched interrogation.

Khashoggi has been missing since he stepped inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. The kingdom has called such allegations "baseless" but has not offered any evidence Khashoggi ever left the consulate. "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain documents to marry his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

So far it still remains unclear how Trump would "punish" the kingdom economically over the journalist's disappearance, but major figures in the US Congress, such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, have suggested halting arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Trump has promised "severe punishment" will be handed out to Riyadh if it turns out that the country is responsible for the alleged killing of the journalist - but that harsh comment has been tempered by other less angry statements which indicate that the United States president is not quite serious about doling out any kind of consequences.

Turkish officials have accused Saudi Arabia of sending in a 15-man team to interrogate, kill, and dismember Khashoggi's body with a bone saw before flying it back to his native country.

The statements published on Sunday and Monday took aim at worldwide governments and news organizations, accusing them of undermining Saudi Arabia's reputation without evidence and warning them against violating Saudi sovereignty.

Many in, however, rub shoulders with Washington Post columnists - of which Khashoggi was one - and thus, his apparent murder has forced many American lobbyists, corporate titans, and public officials to feign shock and concern at the revelation that the totalitarian, Islamist government of Saudi Arabia does not respect the human rights of its dissidents.

Riyadh has struck back at the allegations, calling them "lies" and threatening retaliation over any possible economic sanctions by U.S. or other western countries.

Saudi Arabia has warned that it would retaliate against any punishment with even greater measures.
