Thousand-Strong Migrant 'March' Walking Toward US Border

Thousand-Strong Migrant 'March' Walking Toward US Border”

U.S. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, threatened on Tuesday to cut aid to Honduras if it doesn't stop the impromptu caravan of migrants.

Mexican authorities have warned that only those migrants meeting requirements will be allowed to cross their border with Guatemala.

Honduras: Why are people desperate to leave? Honduran authorities did not immediately respond to the US messages.

"Delivered strong message from @POTUS: no more aid if caravan is not stopped". During the meeting Pence reiterated that the USA was prepared to help with economic development and investment. That caravan dissipated as it approached the US border.

China is strengthening ties with Central America.

Last week, Vice President Pence met with leaders from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.

Honduras is one of a dwindling number of countries that still has formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Pence told Central American leaders at the conference last week that the US would provide more support for efforts to improve economic opportunity and social conditions if they would do the same.

But it remains unclear if governments in the region - many of whose own people are migrants - can summon the political will to physically halt the determined border-crossers.

The current group making their way north plan to seek refugee status in Mexico or pass through to the United States, saying they are fleeing poverty and violence.

Many in the caravan traveled light, with just backpacks and bottles of water.

The caravan began as about 160 people who first gathered early Friday to depart from San Pedro Sula, one of Honduras' most risky places, figuring that traveling as a group would make them less vulnerable to robbery, assault and other dangers common on the migratory path through Central America and Mexico.

Guatemala said in a statement on Sunday that it did not promote or endorse 'irregular migration'.

"Rows of Guatemalan police in black uniforms, some wearing helmets and shields, initially blocked migrants from reaching a customs booth, Reuters images showed". It was not clear how long the standoff lasted, but the group was ultimately able to cross, said march organizer Bartolo Fuentes, a former Honduran lawmaker. The intent is to paint Trump and Republicans as heartless and cold when it comes to immigrants seeking asylum.
