Apple Watch to be used in major study of joint replacement patients”

Zimmer Biomet is also commencing the "mymobility" clinical study, created to study the app's impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for joint replacement patients.

More than 1 million Americans undergo knee and hip replacements every year, and that number is expected to reach 3.5 million by 2035.

Apple and Zimmer Biomet are looking to sign up 10,000 people in the United States for the study.

More and more healthcare-related uses for the Apple Watch are emerging as Apple pushes further in the segment. The companies aim to enroll up to 10,000 patient in the multi-year trial.

Researchers will marry this data and patient-reported feedback with the activity and health data collected by the Apple Watch to determine the effect of the technology on improving patient outcomes and cutting down on costs. This collaboration has yielded Zimmer Biomet mymobility™, an app that uses Apple Watch to facilitate a new level of connection between patients and their surgical care teams, which can immediately impact the journey patients experience when they undergo these procedures.

Your Apple Watch could monitor how you’re recovering after a hip op

The app is called mymobility and it works with Apple Watch and the iPhone as well.

In yet another potential use case for Apple Watch, Apple is partnering with Zimmer Biomet to study the device in supporting patients before and after knee and hip replacement surgery.

"We are proud to enable knee and hip replacement patients to use their own data and share it with their doctors seamlessly, so that they can participate in their care and recovery in a way not previously possible through traditional in-person visits", said COO of Apple Jeff Williams. It also allows patients to access exercise videos and reminders.

The partnership will see the two companies release a new mymobility app, which will help patients prepare for and map the recovery of their surgery.

Apple has been working on new health initiatives for its users, announcing the Apple Watch Series 4 last month, which can detect heart problems, positioning the new watch as a more comprehensive health device. Citing the aging of the population, the figures representing the people getting knee and hip replacement surgeries is bound to increase. Apple also donated 1000 units of Apple Watch to the University of North Carolina to study eating disorder or binge eating.
