Hate crimes in England and Wales targeting people by religion rise 40%”

Hate crime overall has reached an all-time high, according to the Home Office figures, rising 17 per cent to 94,098 a year ago.

Hate crime is defined as 'any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards someone based on a personal characteristic'.

This included 71,251 classed as race hate crimes; 11,638 (12%) offences triggered by sexual orientation; 8,336 (9%) where religion was a factor; 7,226 (8%) motivated because of someone's disability; and 1,651 (2%) were transgender hate crimes.

Data from the Home Office shows that the sharpest rise was in religious hate crime, which rose by 40% from 5,949 in 2016/17.

The government says the increase is thought to be largely driven by improvements in police recording, but also said the spikes in hate crime followed certain events such as the European Union referendum and the terrorist attacks in 2017.

Anti-Muslim hate crime increased by 26 per cent nationally and 40 per cent in London, leading some to question why the Government is not addressing this too.

The figures by the Home Office came during the hate crime awareness week - a week held every year to raise awareness of the public about this type of offences with various activities and meetings.

This is the first time religiously motivated hate crimes have been published by the religious group subject to the offenses.

Spikes in reports of hate offences have been registered following events such as the Brexit vote in June 2016 and the Westminster terror attack past year.

Last month, it was announced that a review by the Law Commission would look at whether offences driven by misogyny - dislike, contempt or ingrained prejudice against women - should be treated as hate crimes. It's thought many people with learning disabilities, Down's syndrome or autism may not recognise the abuse they've experienced as a hate crime or may lack the confidence to report these crimes to the authorities.

The charity believes disability hate crimes are underreported despite rising figures.

Islamophobic attacks in the United Kingdom spike sharply after deadly terror attacks in Manchester and London a year ago, according to official figures.

"Our refreshed action plan sets out how we will tackle the root causes of prejudice and racism, support hate crime victims and ensure offenders face the full force of the law", he said.

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said: "It is completely unacceptable that anyone should live in fear of intimidation and violence because of their beliefs or the colour of their skin. We must challenge prejudice and intolerance, whenever and wherever it appears in our society", United Kingdom communities secretary Rt Hon James Brokenshire said.

Mr Hogg said: "Hate Crime is very unpleasant and can be very traumatic for anyone who experiences it".
