Top anti-Taliban official killed in Kandahar shooting”

Miller, who had been attending a meeting with security officials ahead of parliamentary elections on Saturday, was not injured but two Americans were wounded in the crossfire and had been evacuated, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokesman Colonel Knut Peters said. Two more were abducted and four wounded by Islamist militants.

The gunman, reported to be a security guard, opened fire as officials left a meeting in Kandahar province.

Miller was not hurt in the assault claimed by the militant group that also wounded at least 12 people, including three Americans and a provincial governor, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Afghan officials said. At the time, he said a nationwide campaign against the Taliban was needed and that he believed the group "was puppets of other countries".

In addition to Raziq, intelligence chief Abdul Momin was also killed in the attack, Glasse reports, citing Kandahar's deputy governor Agha Lala Dastageri. Two Americans were injured in the incident at the compound, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokesperson said, and a local cameraman was reportedly killed.

"Initial reports indicate this was an Afghan-on-Afghan incident", Peters said.

The attack comes a day after a parliamentarian candidate and another key anti-Taliban figure from the Helmand province was killed in his campaign office. Three Americans were wounded, have been medically evacuated and are stable. "We are being told the area is secure", a spokesman for U.S. Forces-Afghanistan tweeted. He was on the militant group's watchlist for using torture techniques against Taliban inmates, but enjoyed reasonable security in Kandahar. Gen. Harold J. Greene was killed and about a dozen USA soldiers were wounded when an Afghan soldier opened fire inside a building in Kabul. The militia has been heavily targeted by the Taliban in recent years. His forces received Western training and funds, and USA military officials often consulted him.

At least 10 candidates have been killed so far, including Abdul Jabar Qahraman who was blown up Wednesday by a bomb placed under his sofa in the southern province of Helmand.

Afghanistan is tense ahead of the October 20 legislative election after the Taliban pledged to attack the ballot.

Three senior Afghan officials were reported to be among the casualties, but there were conflicting accounts on whether they were killed or wounded.
