China May Soon Have a Second (Artificial) Moon

China May Soon Have a Second (Artificial) Moon”

A city in China is planning to launch an "artificial moon" that will light up the skies as far as 50 miles around.

The People's Daily reports that Chengdu plans to launch their artificial moon as early as 2020. The plans were reportedly revealed by the Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute Co.at a Chinese innovation and entrepreneurship event that took place last week.

The likelihood that the moon will ever rise in the skies above Chengdu has already been dismissed by some skeptics - but the Chinese are not the first to come up with the ambitious idea. The company says it will be launching an "illumination satellite" in less than two years, this created to light up the night sky with artificial light 8 times greater than the actual Moon. The state media outlet claims that the fake moon would be able to light up an area with a diameter of 10 to 80 kilometers with officials on the ground able to focus all that the illumination on Chengdu.

The project has sparked concern from the public, as many began to worry that the lights reflected from space could affect the daily routines of certain animals.

The People's Daily report credited the idea to "a French artist, who imagined hanging a necklace made of mirrors above the Earth which could reflect sunshine through the streets of Paris all year round". When a man-made moon is orbiting, people can only see a bright star in the sky.

However, one of those involved in the project, Kang Weimin, director of the Institute of Optics, School of Aerospace, Harbin Institute of Technology, said this was not the case.

He added that the testing of the illumination started years ago and is now ready. The mirror failed to unfold in space and the experiment was halted.
