'I Like Brave People': Medal of Honor Bestowed on Vietnam Veteran

'I Like Brave People': Medal of Honor Bestowed on Vietnam Veteran”

When his commanding officer was severely wounded, he took charge and led his company into Hue and commanded the company of Marines for three days.

"By the end of the day, John and his company of less than 150 Marines had pushed into the city held by at least 6,000 communist fighters", he continued.

Trump said Canley was personally responsible for having saved the lives of 20 Marines under his command.

The 80-year-old retired Marine continues to advise young Marines on a military base near his home.

While serving as a company gunnery sergeant, Canley fought off multiple enemy attacks while making his way to Hue City to find allies who were surrounded.

The intense urban battle at Hue City is hallowed battle ground for the Corps.

Dozens of marines attended the ceremony, including Commandant of the Marine Corps General Robert Neller, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former Marine General John Kelly, the president's chief of staff.

That set in motion a multi-year process with the Marine Corps and the Defense Department that ultimately required the House of Representatives to pass legislation to waive the five-year time limit on awarding the Medal of Honor on Canley's behalf. "Great people, but very, very few like you, John".

According to statements submitted by his men, what he did was repeatedly expose himself to enemy fire to pull wounded Marines to safety. But Canley, she said, would "say it's not about him, but it is about the Marines that he served with".

After a review lasting almost four years, Defense Secretary James Mattis agreed that Canley's heroism merited the Medal of Honor. Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Calif., sponsored the bill approving the upgraded award, which was passed in January.

Canley's award came as no surprise to those who knew and served with him. "He always talks about his Marines, his Marines that he loved then and he loved now, and when they speak of him, some have called him a giant of a man, that he was invincible, that he was a Marine's Marine".

Trump marveled at the veteran's fitness and quipped he's strong enough to ship out today. John Canley for his "unmatched bravery" during the historic battle to retake the city of Hue during the Tet Offensive.

A recent video provided by the Marine Corps shows him holding his own while working out with young Marines almost a quarter of his age.

First Lady Melania Trump also lauded Canley for his service, tweeting, "Thank you Sergeant Major John Canley for your service to our nation. All I can say is keep it up, I think it'll pay dividends".
