Jamal Khashoggi disappearance: USA asks Turkey for recording evidence”

Khashoggi, a USA resident, was last seen more than two weeks ago entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to obtain a marriage document.

But Pompeo declared he did not want "to talk about any of the facts", while President Donald Trump said innocence must be presumed, drawing a parallel with his US Supreme Court judge nominee who faced sexual assault accusations.

A team of Turkish investigators searched the Saudi consulate in Istanbul for a second time as part of a probe into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to an Agence France-Presse (AFP) correspondent.

Saudi Arabia has stoked Turkish ire with its support for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, who are at the vanguard of the US-led campaign against the Islamic State in Syria. The Wall Street Journal also spoke with multiple Turkish sources who identified Tubaigy (whose name is also spelled Salah Al Tabiqi) as the person who dismembered Khashoggi.

Atop the opinion piece, titled "What the Arab world needs most is free expression", Karen Attiah, the Global Opinions editor, shared a note explaining that the newspaper initially postponed releasing the piece "because we hoped Jamal would come back to us so that he and I could edit it together".

After he was shown into the office of the Saudi consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, the agents seized Khashoggi nearly immediately and began to beat and torture him, eventually cutting off his fingers, the senior Turkish official said.

Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Saudi policies and columnist for the Washington Post who was living in the United States, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get marriage documents.

When asked what gave him the benefit of the doubt in believing Saudi Arabia's account that it was not involved in Khashoggi's disappearance, Pompeo said, "I'm waiting for the investigation to be completed".

It comes as details emerge of an apparent audio recording of the alleged torture and murder of the Washington Post columnist in the Saudi consulate in the Turkish city.

Several vehicles with Saudi diplomatic number plates were filmed by CCTV cameras moving from the consulate to the residence just under two hours after Mr Khashoggi entered the consulate on the day he vanished.

Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud has said claims "about orders to kill [Khashoggi] are lies and baseless allegations against the government of the kingdom". "I'm not sure yet that it exists, probably does, possibly does", he later told reporters when asked about audio or video evidence. "Here we go again with, you know, you're guilty until proven innocent".

He was allegedly killed during an interrogation inside the consulate, media outlets have reported. "You are going to get me into trouble", to which one of the men purportedly responded, "If you want to stay alive, shut up".

Many have been speculating in recent days what the effect of the Khashoggi affair will have on the political position of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in the country behind whose throne he became the power only a little over a year ago.

Trump said he planned to see Pompeo either Wednesday night or Thursday morning to get a readout of his meetings with the Saudis and Turks.

"I do think it's important that everyone. keep in their mind that we have lots of important relationships - financial relationships between USA and Saudi companies, governmental relationship, things we work on together all across the world", Pompeo said.
