Man dies from extremely rare ‘SQUIRREL DISEASE’ after eating rodent’s BRAINS

Man dies from extremely rare ‘SQUIRREL DISEASE’ after eating rodent’s BRAINS”

A NY man died after he developed a rare and fatal brain disorder from eating squirrel brains.

As reported by the United Kingdom news portal DailyMail, that happened in 2015 at a Rochester hospital where the man went complaining of losing his ability to walk correctly, think, and losing touch with reality.

The report identified a 61-year-old male who was diagnosed with the rare brain infection called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease after eating squirrel brains. According to reports, only a few hundred cases of vCJD have ever been reported.

However, the medical personnel could not link the man's situation to anything, that until the family of the NY man admitted he was a hunter and had recently eaten squirrel brains.

Dr. Tara Chen told Live Science, it was not known if the man purposely ate the brains or if other parts of squirrel meat were contaminated with brain tissue. It is believed to be caused by consumption of products from cows with the disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or "mad cow" disease).

In a shocking incident, a man died because of eating a squirrel brain.

Symptoms of CJD usually begin to appear around age 60 and include depression, anxiety, memory loss, personality changes, impaired thinking, difficulty swallowing and difficulty speaking.

There is no treatment or cure for CJD.

Many sufferers lapse into coma and about 70 percent die within a year.

A type of CJD called variant CJD (vCJD) can occur from eating infected beef. According to the specialists, they found one more evidence, increasing the total to five.

Doctors at Rochester Regional Health, who wrote the report, noted they were shocked when four of the exceptionally rare suspected cases of CJD were presented between November 2017 and April 2018. Although the patient passed away after his diagnosis, Chen and colleagues are working to obtain access to his medical records to see if CJD was confirmed at autopsy.

Only four people have ever confirmed to have the disease in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The team is now working to obtain the patient's medical records to see if a coroner confirmed CJD upon his death.
