`Extreme Dangerous’ Hurricane Willa heads to Mexico”

Hurricane Willa, now a Category 4, is expected to land in the region late Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hurricane Willa has been described as "extremely dangerous" after it gained rapid strength on Sunday night and was upgraded to a Category 4.

Hurricane Willa has quickly strengthened into a deadly Category 4 storm and will intensify further this week in wake of low wind shear and warm water temperatures.

Willa was about 365kmsouth-southwest of Cabo Corrientes with maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 105 miles.

At present, storm Willa is heading north-northwestwards, however, the system will gradually recurve northwards on Monday and then north-northeastwards by Tuesday.

It had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and the centre of the storm would likely "remain just offshore or near the southern coast of Mexico through Tuesday morning", according to the NHC. "Some slight strengthening is possible today, and Willa could become a category 5 hurricane later this morning", the agency said.

It was projected to weaken somewhat before hitting land but was still expected to be extremely risky.

In areas of western Jalisco rainfall accumulations could be as high as 18 inches, triggering life-threatening flash flooding and landslides.

The NHC said it could make landfall along Mexico's southwestern coast Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and bring with it a life-threatening storm surge - especially near and to the south of where the center of Willa makes landfall.

Consequently, we can expect torrential rainfall setting off a potentially damaging storm surge over the Pacific Coast of Mexico by the middle of the week.

A hurricane warning is in effect for areas including San Blas, on the Pacific coast, and the beach resort of Mazatlan.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Vicente, which formed in the Pacific off southern Mexico on Saturday, began to weaken as it hovered along the coast of southern Mexico on Sunday, located about 230 miles south-east of Acapulco. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Playa Perula to San Blas and north of Mazatlan to Bahia Tempehuaya.
