NASA captures incredible image of near-perfect rectangle iceberg off Antarctic Peninsula”

It even has a name: A tabular iceberg, a type of iceberg both broad and flat.

They added: "These flights will provide a yearly, multi-instrument look at the behaviour of the rapidly changing features of the Greenland and Antarctic ice".

WTF?! NASA has released an image showing an iceberg in Antarctica that appears so rectangular and flat, it looks purposely cut into shape.

Like all icebergs, Brunt said only 10 percent of this particular tabular berg was visible above the waterline, with the majority of it submerged.

NASA ice scientist Kelly Brunt said Tabular icebergs come about via a process "a bit like a fingernail growing too long and cracking off at the end". The chunk of ice has since been known as iceberg A-68.

"They split from the edges of ice shelves - large blocks of ice, connected to land but floating in the water surrounding iced-over places like Antarctica".

The iceberg is believed to have broken off from the Larsen C ice shelf, where a giant iceberg the size of DE calved previous year. This berg hasn't been measured yet, but Brunt says it's about one mile across, which isn't not particularly large.

She said: "We get two types of icebergs".

"What makes this one a bit unusual is that it looks nearly like a square", she added.

NASA shared an image of the perfectly formed iceberg on its Twitter page, after spotting it while flying over the region as part of Operation Icebridge, the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice.

In any case, users stressed that the iceberg certainly looked interesting, with several suggesting it reminded them of a scene out of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The berg's sharp corners indicate wind and waves haven't had much time to break it down, Brunt said.
