6 kids dead in adenovirus outbreak at N.J. hospital”

Eighteen cases of adenovirus, six of them fatal, have been confirmed among pediatric residents at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, according to a statement from the New Jersey Department of Health.

Kirgan added: 'The combination of a worse strain of adenovirus together with a fragile population has led to a more severe outbreak'.

"The Health Department is continuing to work closely with the facility on infection control issues", the department said in a statement.

Adenoviruses are prolific viruses that can cause a variety of illnesses, including upper respiratory infections - such as colds - as well as pneumonia, gastrointestinal illness, conjunctivitis (pink eye) and even urinary tract infections.

The children at the Wanaque Center fit into this category.

The health department will continue an active on-site surveillance and has recommended measures to protect against the further spread of infection, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said on Twitter.

The strain afflicting the children is usually associated with acute respiratory illness, according to the CDC, which on its website instructs health workers to report unusual clusters to state or local health departments.

Officials say that this strain is typically associated with a disease in communal living spaces. The health department says "minor handwashing deficiencies" were found at the facility on Sunday.

A team from the health department were on hand at the center Tuesday to investigate.

A rep for the center didn't immediately return a message.

After experiencing cases of adenovirus in its pediatric unit, the center notified government health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is fully cooperating with them and has sought out their guidance, the Wanaque center said in a statement emailed by Rowena Bautista, administrator of the center.

The facility has been told not to admit any new patients until the outbreak ends.
