Dyson to make electric cars in Singapore

Dyson to make electric cars in Singapore”

The factory is set for completion in 2020, and follows on from the announcement earlier this year of £200 million ($367 million) investment in new buildings and test facilities at the Dyson's campus in the United Kingdom.

James Dyson, the billionaire British inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, has chosen to build his electric vehicle in Singapore to be close to Asian customers, supply chains and a highly skilled workforce.

Prominent Brexiter Sir James Dyson has chosen to build the firm's first electric auto in Singapore in a blow to United Kingdom manufacturing.

Dyson, founded by the billionaire British inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner James Dyson, announced its plans to build an electric auto a little over a year ago.

Carmakers are stepping up investment in electric vehicles in response to ever-tightening emissions restrictions and penalties on the use of internal combustion engines, with some countries already promising outright bans.

Dyson already employs around 1,100 people in Singapore at its new Singapore Technology Centre at Science Park One and its Advanced Manufacturing Centre at West Park where it makes electric motors.

Dyson is looking to exploit his company's expertise in solid-state battery technology and electric motors that are found in his innovative vacuum cleaners and other products, such as bladeless fans and air purifiers.

The company revealed its intention to build electric cars a year ago, joining the growing list of vehicle firms moving towards EVs. Dyson previously stated that the budget for the EV project was £2bn and that £200m of that amount was going to be spent in the United Kingdom on research and development, as well as test track facilities.

Dyson CEO Jim Rowan also said that Singapore offers them access to big markets, highly skilled workforce and an extensive supply chain.

James Dyson said the company's "center of gravity" has tilted toward Asia, which past year generated nearly three quarters of the company's revenue growth.

Dyson is still keeping details of its electric-car secret.
