Perfectly rectangular iceberg found in Antarctica

Perfectly rectangular iceberg found in Antarctica”

But how does the iceberg form its ideal shape? The calving is accelerated when warmer temperatures cause meltwater to trickle into the splitting cracks and widen the ice shelf division.

Nasa had found a piece of floating ice in Antarctica that is so flawless, it looks like it was deliberately cut.

It looks like it has been cut that way deliberately, but this huge iceberg is simply a wonderful display of nature's awesomeness and beauty. Not all of them are rectangular-some have jagged borders like a puzzle piece, but most of their sides are sheer and smooth (at least at first).

NASA's department of Cryospheric Sciences, known as NASA ICE, discovered the tabular iceberg during a recent flyover of the Larsen C ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula.

He says it's a kind of formation called a tabular iceberg.

A huge, flat iceberg with ideal, right angles was spotted on October 16 by NASA's Operation IceBridge floating among sea ice just off the Larsen C ice shelf.

They are formed when they split from the edges of ice shelves, and are often rectangular in shape when they break off. Brunt added that only about 10 percent of the iceberg's mass is visible, the rest being underwater.

"We get two types of icebergs: We get the type that everyone can envision in their head that sank the Titanic, and they look like prisms or triangles at the surface and you know they have a insane subsurface", Kelly Brunt, an ice scientist with NASA, told Live Science.

A triangular iceberg was also seen nearby, surrounded by several different types of sea ice. After years of anticipation by scientists, a formation the size of DE broke off from Antarctica last year.

What you're looking at here is a tabular iceberg.

The discovery was made as part of Operation IceBridge, the largest ever aerial survey of the planet's ice around Greenland and in Antartica.
