Stephen Hawking's Papers And Wheelchair For Sale

Stephen Hawking's Papers And Wheelchair For Sale”

Almost two dozen personal items belonging to the late legendary physicist Stephen Hawking will be for sale at auction beginning on Halloween day. 22, Christie's announced the online sale that will include wheelchairs, scientific papers, some of the awards received, and a few others.

Only five copies of the Ph.D. thesis exist - although a digital copy was made available online for free by Cambridge University Library's Open Access Week a year ago.

Hawking also appeared on "The Simpsons" multiple times, and the upcoming auction will include a script from one of his show appearances.

The items - part of a science sale that includes papers by Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein - will be on display in London for several days from October 30.

The famous physicist was diagnosed at just 21 years old with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Stephen Hawking was a cosmic visionary, a figure of inspiration and a global celebrity. The items will be on display in London starting October 30, with bids open from October 31 to November 8.

A signed copy of Prof Stephen Hawking's PhD thesis is expected to raise more than £100,000 at an auction this month. So, for much of his life, Hawking used a wheelchair to move and a speech-generating device to talk.

The motorized wheelchair that carried Hawking out of the 1980s and into his most high-profile period also is on the auction block, with Christie's reportedly expecting it to fetch between $13,000 and $20,000. A leather bomber jacket and a copy of the script of the 22nd season premiere of "The Simpsons", entitled "Elementary School Musical", for which Hawking lent his voice.

Thomas Venning, head of books and manuscripts at Christie's, told the Associated Press that these papers "trace the development of his thought-this brilliant, electrifying intelligence". The copy comes with a bomber jacket that Hawking once wore. She said the auction would give "admirers of his work the chance to acquire a memento of our father's extraordinary life in the shape of a small selection of evocative and fascinating items". Stephen Hawking DiesHawking passed away on March 14 in his home in Cambridge, England.

Proceeds from the wheelchair's sale will be donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association and The Stephen Hawking Foundation.

In addition, the London-based auction house will also put up a copy of "A Brief History of Time", a 1988 best-seller, that is signed with Hawking's thumbprint.
