China will launch an artificial moon”

Wu Chunfeng, head of Tian Fu New Area Science Society, the organisationresponsible for the project, said the first of these man-made moons will launch from Sichuan's Xichang Satellite Launch Centre by 2020, with three more to follow in 2022 if the first test goes well.

The satellite is set to be launched into orbit about 310 miles above the city of Chengdu in 2020, and may have the power to entirely replace streetlights, The Daily Wire and other outlets noted.

State media recently reported that a research organization in the southwestern city of Chengdu City in Sichuan Province, called Tian Fu New Area Science Society, has developed a kind of space satellite with a reflective coating that can deflect sunlight back to Earth, similar to how the moon shines, according to an October 19 report by China Daily, China's state-run English-language newspaper.

Amazingly, scientists believe that the artificial moon will be eight times brighter than the actual moon, however, to humans on Earth, the brightness will be less than normal street lights.

Will it be enough to cut down the electricity expenses of street lights?

The moon orbits almost 239,000 miles above the earth and is the fifth-largest natural satellite in the solar system.

This is because the artificial moon's lights could replace some of the streetlights, therefore lessening the energy consumption. Scientists also say that the artificial moon is expected to provide much-needed illumination during emergency events like natural disasters or blackouts. The testing of the light beams will be done in an uninhabited desert so that it does not interfere with any people or Earth observatories.

Harbin Institute of Technology and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp have evaluated and approved the project.

The space craft will have a mirror reflector to catch the sun's rays from space when the city is in darkness and will bounce them down to Earth. If it succeeds, it will be the first rover to explore the "dark side" of the moon.

"The "artificial moon" would increase the illumination level at the ground by a factor of about 47", Barentine added.

The mirror was supposed to work like an artificial moon, according to a CNN report back then, reflecting sunlight onto several regions in Russian Federation and other former Soviet republics before reaching Germany and the Czech Republic. The plans have been in work for several years, but only recently have engineers come closer to realizing their dream of the artificial moon.
