Ninth person dies after infection at NJ nursing center

Ninth person dies after infection at NJ nursing center”

New Jersey health officials say they've confirmed another case of adenovirus in an outbreak at a pediatric rehabilitation center that left nine people dead.

The department said in a statement on Friday that the latest death involved a child who was "medically fragile with respiratory illness".

There have been 25 total cases of the virus at the facility.

"We are working every day to ensure all infection control protocols are continuously followed and closely monitoring the situation at the facility", he said.

Adenovirus is a respiratory virus that can causes mild or serious illness. The child had become ill before October 22, according to officials.

"This is an active investigation of an outbreak of adenovirus so it is possible that lab tests will confirm additional cases", the state's health department said in a statement.

Another will be sent to the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, where a premature baby died amid a bacterial infection.

"To date, confirmed cases became ill between September 26 and October 22", according to a health department statement.

At the hospital, the state health department earlier said it found four Acinetobacter baumannii cases since October 1. According to the CDC, the virus causes a wide range of illnesses - including the common cold, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, pink eye, fever, bladder infection, inflammation of the stomach or neurologic disease.

The agency said the most recent individual became sick on or before October 22, which remains the last day when a patient showed new symptoms.

A ninth child has died at a New Jersey rehabilitation facility following a viral outbreak.

The facility has been told not to admit any new patients until the outbreak ends.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting with the outbreak at the facility, and the Department of Health Communicable Disease Service is on site as well.

This strain of adenovirus has been associated with communal living.
