Record: So close yet no probe was in the sun”

NASA's Parker Solar Probe set two records on October 29 - one for becoming the closest a man-made object has gotten to the sun, and one for becoming the fastest-ever human-made object relative to the sun.

In the next seven years Parker Solar Probe will beat your own records and will be 6.16 million kilometers from the sun.

NASA said in a statement, "Spacecraft crossed the record distance of 26.55 million miles recorded from the Sun's surface at 1.04 a.m. on October 29". The old record was held by the German-American Helios 2 spacecraft, which achieved the feat in April 1976.

Its final close approach - coming just 3.83 million miles from the Sun's surface - is expected in 2024, NASA said.

In the year 2025, Parker Solar Probe is estimated to get a speed of 692,012 km/h (430,000 mph) which will for sure break all the records.

The current distance of the spacecraft from the Sun is still quite large, but it might change because the probe is moving closer towards the Sun.

"He called this cascade of energy the solar wind, and he described an entire complex system of plasmas, magnetic fields and energetic particles that make up this phenomenon", according to a NASA entry on Parker.

"Parker Solar Probe" will come from the sun, but even closer. And it will keep getting closer to the sun until it flies through the corona, or outer atmosphere, for the first time next week, passing within 15 million miles (24 million kilometers) of the solar surface.

As said earlier, it has been just 78 days since the probe was launched. NASA explains:The DSN sends a signal to the spacecraft, which then retransmits it back to the DSN, allowing the team to determine the spacecraft's speed and position based on the timing and characteristics of the signal.

The Parker spacecraft's first solar encounter will begin today. Eric Christian, a space scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told UPI last month ahead of the probe's launch.

The spacecraft is able to fly so close to the sun because it has a special carbon-composite shield protecting itself and its instruments from intense heat and radiation.

The mission is expected to revolutionize scientific understanding of the sun and its role in how it affects the Earth and the solar system.
