Global smartphone shipments reached 387 million units in Q3: Counterpoint Research

Global smartphone shipments reached 387 million units in Q3: Counterpoint Research”

As for Xiaomi and Oppo, the two brands maintained their sales of 34.3 million and 29.9 million with their market shares of 9.7% and 8.4% respectively.

According to data firm IDC (International Data Corporation), smartphones manufacturers shipped about 355.2 million units last quarter which resulted in a decline of 6%.

Samsung remained the top smartphone vendor with 72 million shipments, a 13% drop from last year's Q3, while Huawei overtook Apple to claim second with 52 million shipped phones. Thus, retaining as world's second largest smartphone manufacturer with 14 percent share.

While Chinese players continued their growth trajectory with strong performances in markets outside China. "It can be attributed to a weakening demand in developed markets like China, the USA and Western Europe which account for nearly half of smartphone sales globally", Pathak noted.

Apple hold third despite launching its flagship XS during the quarter, shipping 46.9 million smartphones in Q3. In addition, growing markets like India and Indonesia are being changed by the rapid growth of other Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo.

Global smartphone sales fell for a fourth consecutive quarter in the period through September, suggesting a challenging market for device makers awaiting catalysts to spark sales, researchers said. The figure is a continuation of the market's ongoing slump, with this quarter being the fourth consecutive period of decline. It shipped 52 million devices, up from 39.1 million units in the same quarter previous year, thanks to its P and Mate lineups and the phones offered by its Honor sub-brand.

However, emerging markets are full of potential and present long-term growth opportunities.

By offering additional features such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), dual cameras, full-screen displays, and higher memory configurations, smartphone OEMs are subtly increasing the average selling price of devices and maintaining revenues, despite declining shipments, he further said.

Since emerging markets are under-penetrated, they have a smaller smartphone base and are not able to offset the global decline.

The next growth cycle in developed markets will likely be driven by the emergence of commercially available 5G, which is still some quarters away, the analyst added.
