Trump says 'I think we'll make a deal with China' on trade

Trump says 'I think we'll make a deal with China' on trade”

In a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, Xi also said he and Trump hoped to expand bilateral trade cooperation, Xi was quoted as saying on CCTV state television.

"I think we will make a deal with China", he told journalists at the White House.

"Just had a long and very good conversation with President Xi Jinping of China", said Trump on his official Twitter account, reports Efe.

The possible meeting between Xi and Trump in Buenos Aires is being broached amid growing trade tensions between the two countries after Washington imposed tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of Chinese imports and Beijing responded in kind against USA exports. "We are having very good discussions with China".

"We're doing a normal, routine run-through of things we already put together and normal preparation", Kudlow said on CNBC Friday.

Trump said he and Xi plan to meet during a gathering of the Group of 20 major economies this month in Argentina.

One of China's vice commerce ministers Wang Bingnan said on Saturday the country is willing to resolve trade issues with the United States through mutually respectful talks and on an equal footing, similar to past comments from Beijing.

The US and China's tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods have rumbled on for months as Trump pledges to help create more US manufacturing jobs. "But China very much wants to make a deal", he said.

Bloomberg reported on Friday that Trump wants to reach a trade agreement with China at the G20 meeting.

Trump, who began targeting China's trade policies before he entered office, has imposed three rounds of tariffs on Chinese products worth more than $250bn since the beginning of his administration.

Lu Xiang, a specialist on United States affairs at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that Beijing had been preparing for a "worse than the worst" confrontation with the U.S., and added that any further escalation would be fatal to an already highly volatile USA stock market. But Kudlow cautioned that Trump would "aggressively" pursue his agenda against China if no deals were reached on intellectual property theft, cybersecurity and tariffs on commodities, among other issues. "We're not on the cusp of a deal".

"We will see what happens at the G20 and with Liu's talks, but I am not optimistic that anything momentous will come out of this", Zimmerman said.
