Brexit: Dominic Raab demands backstop 'break clause'

Brexit: Dominic Raab demands backstop 'break clause'”

Her plan would avoid the need for a hard border in Northern Ireland, which has always been the main sticking point in negotiations. This would negate the need for checks at the Border.

His comments come after Brexit secretary Dominic Raab reportedly demanded that he be allowed to pull Britain out of the backstop arrangement after three months.

British media reports that Mrs May had already concluded a "secret deal", were dismissed by negotiators.

Speaking at a meeting of the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference in Dublin, Mr Coveney said he believed "it is possible to get a deal in November", adding: "This border issue is complicated to resolve. but I think we're very close to resolving it".

In a major intervention on the controversial backstop, amid reports that the government plans to keep Northern Ireland in aspects of the European Union trade structures, Mr Davis said it was "pretty clear there is genuine and significant concern regarding the implications of any fresh backstop text".

"These ideas are not backstops at all and don't deliver on previous United Kingdom commitments".

The former Brexit secretary yesterday called on the government to publish the legal advice it has on the Irish border backstop.

At the same time, it reported that the prime minister was on course to agree a future economic partnership that would leave open the possibility of Canada-style free trade deal sought by Brexiteers.

It will also include an "exit clause" created to convince Brexiteers that remaining in the customs union is only temporary, the newspaper said.

The Irish Government is opposed to any suggestion the backstop would have an "exit clause" as suggested in the "Sunday Times" report.

"The reality is that we need a November summit more than the European Union do", a government source said. There's an exit mechanism - success.

Asked about the report, a spokesman at May's office said: "This is all speculation".

A spokesperson for the PM said: "This is all speculation".

Raab has written to Prime Minister Theresa May to urge her to back his plan, the FT said, quoting a person briefed on the matter.

He said there was a "rapidly ticking clock" but that minds were now being focused with a view to concluding a deal and he welcomed that.

It said Mr Raab made the proposal to Mr Coveney in London last week.

Senior sources told the paper that Prime Minister Theresa May has secured concessions from Brussels, with the EU agreeing to write an "all-UK" customs union into the divorce deal.

Writing in the Sunday Times, Mr Davis said: "It was an unwise decision to accept the EU's language on dealing with the Northern Ireland border".
