Japan Airlines pilot admits being 10 times over alcohol limit

Japan Airlines pilot admits being 10 times over alcohol limit”

Tests found the 42-year-old first officer had 189 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood in his system, nearly 10 times the 20 milligrams limit for a pilot.

It apologised on Thursday for the incident.

He was arrested just 50 minutes before he was scheduled to co-pilot Japan Airlines (JAL) flight JL44 to Tokyo after he failed a breathalyzer test.

A Japan Airlines (JAL) pilot was arrested in London on Sunday after it was discovered that his blood-alcohol content was almost ten times over the legal limit. British police made the co-pilot take a blood test to confirm the results.

The pilot admitted that he had drunk two bottles of wine and a pitcher of beer the night before the flight, NHK reported.

According to JAL, Jitsukawa may have improperly cleared its standard alcohol check, as the airline's breath-testing equipment did not detect any issues.

The drink-drive limit in England is 80 milligrams.

Jitsukawa admitted to the improper conduct at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in west London on Thursday and will remain in custody until he is sentenced on November 29.

"The company sincerely apologises to the passengers and to all affected by the employee's actions", JAL said in a press release.

In a statement, Japan Airlines said: "The company does not condone the individual's actions and takes this violation seriously, as safety remains our utmost priority".

After over an hour's delay, the flight departed under the charge of the two remaining pilots.

Transport Minister Keiichi Ishii yesterday told reporters that the government would look into tightening the rules on drinking by flight crews.
