Whitsundays shark attack victim dies

Whitsundays shark attack victim dies”

A paramedic was on the scene to assess and treat the man, before he was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital on Queensland's east coast at about 8.30pm (11.30pm NZT).

Whitsunday Police are interviewing witnesses to the incident and will use this information to prepare a report for the Coroner.

Police and fisheries boats were patrolling Cid Harbor on Tuesday and advising tourists on yachts to keep out of the water, O'Connell said.

The Queensland Police Service extends its sympathies to the deceased man's loved ones at this hard time.

Whitsunday is the largest island in the Whitsunday Islands group, a major global tourist attraction popular with scuba divers and sailors where shark attacks have been rare.

"During this holiday period, we urge people to exercise caution, stay out of the water and not throw food scraps overboard from boats", the department said.

Late Monday afternoon, the victim was taking turns with a woman on a paddle board and swimming in the harbour. "His injuries and the reaction to those injuries was so severe that, unfortunately, he did not survive long after his arrival".

A man has died after being bitten by a shark while swimming in Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays where two other people were recently attacked.

"Every time you have a series of bites, it's usually because of something that's changed within the environment or something that will affect or change the shark's behaviour", Dr Chapman said.

The victims were 12-year-old Melbourne girl Hannah Papps, who suffered a "significant leg injury" during the attack, and Tasmanian tourist 46-year-old Justine Barwick, who suffered severe injuries to her right thigh and had to undergo reconstructive surgery.

A man has been killed by a shark in the Whitsundays.

Those attacks in one of Australia's most well-known tourist areas led authorities to set out baited lines to capture and kill several sharks.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones says expert advice suggests drumlines are not the most effective method of controlling shark populations.

Prof Colin Simpfendorfer, from James Cook University, said shark attacks were "extremely rare" in the Whitsundays, but no theories had "so far been supported by real substantial information" to understand the spike in shark activity.

"We really need to be smarter than what we have been and actually learn from these things as opposed to just going out and killing animals", Dr Chapman said.
