'You're F*cked': Ex-Hillary Clinton Aide Berates Trump as Midterms Heat Up”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and other GOP leaders have also been blaming Social Security and Medicare as sources of the ballooning deficit, suggesting cuts and other reforms could be coming if they hold control. But now the Democrats are harnessing military patriotism too.

But there was very little grace and nothing incredible in a bitter campaign, the nadir of which came when several television networks declined to air a patently racist advertisement from the Trump campaign - approved by President Trump - a commercial so xenophobic that even Fox News, the President's cable channel of preference, refused to air it. GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock in Virginia's 10th District in the D.C. suburbs is expected to lose.

Trump's usually active Twitter feed was quiet Tuesday as voting booths opened across the country. The Cook Political Report, which predicted a gain of 30 to 40 Democratic seats in a majority-seizing night, also lists 30 House contests as "toss-ups". Perhaps more important, they would claim subpoena power to investigate Trump's personal and professional shortcomings. The race's final days have been marred by controversies over voting access, which Kemp oversees as the Georgia secretary of state. "That said, it may be just as likely - or even more likely - that we're understating the Democrats in the House".

On the flip side, if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate, that's not only a victory for the GOP, but a validation of Trump's brand of politics and his unconventional presidency. Democratic Senate incumbents were up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri - states Trump carried by nearly 25 percentage points on average two years ago.

- Minimum wage increases are on the ballot in two states.

US President Donald Trump arrives for a "Make America Great Again" campaign rally at McKenzie Arena, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on November 4, 2018. Florida has the longest coastline in the USA, but Florida's Republican candidate for governor, Mr Ron DeSantis, is a climate sceptic.

Governor posts and seats in state legislatures are also up for grabs.

Democrats are most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield extending from Alaska to Florida.

United States stocks opened flat on Tuesday as investors awaited the election results.

"People are coming out because they care about taking back the House and turning this country around", she said, calling Pelosi an "inspiring leader".

"How we conduct ourselves in public life is on the ballot", Obama told Democratic volunteers in suburban Virginia.

The final polls varied, but they were generally good for Democrats. But more results will be trickling in to track from the 8 p.m. hour.

"Democrats are more weather sensitive, when compared to Republicans, and among the most weather-sensitive were African-Americans, those 65 and older and 18-24 year olds". Democrats are bracing for a loss in North Dakota with Sen. Two women are competing for the spot, Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema. Democrats are likely to flip the governor's mansion in MI, and are hoping to finally oust Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, but that race is another true toss-up. If Democrats want any chance at making gains in the Senate, Nevada is a must-win. If Abrams wins, she will be the first black woman to become the governor of the conservative Southern state of Georgia. With the first polls not slated to close until 6 P.M. eastern, polling was the only indicators both parties had on Tuesday of their prospects. Another top California Democratic representative, Adam Schiff, would likely rise to chair the House Intelligence Committee, where he is now the ranking member. In many cases they're running against career politicians. That had always been a GOP stronghold that flipped to Clinton in 2016.

What if Republicans keep the House?

If Democrats win the House, attention will quickly shift to the question of who will lead the party.

In Texas, early voting has exceeded the entire turnout in 2014. But if the GOP loses its majority it will need to to go on defense to protect Trump. The main Republican superPAC started spending to help shore him up.

In Cleveland, Trump bashed DeWine's Democratic opponent, Richard Cordray, whom he declared "a bad person" who "has hurt a lot of people".

Republicans will do their best to exacerbate those divisions.
