The Fight for the Senate, 2018: The Results As They Come In

The Fight for the Senate, 2018: The Results As They Come In”

Analysts expect pressure on stocks if Democrats gain control of the House and a sharper downward reaction if they win the Senate, too.

Republicans hadn't publicly given up hope Tuesday though that they could pull off a victory, and continued making their push to voters.

In the final days of the campaign, Trump amped up his rhetoric, peppering his rallies with improbable doomsday scenarios should the Democrats win control of one or both congressional bodies. "In short, should the Democrats take the House, we can expect more policy gridlock and the revelation of more political scandals", Brown said.

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree.

"I think, like the TV stations have been saying, it's a referendum on the Trump presidency", said Eloisa Alvarez as she voted in Miami.

By the time the sun goes down in Australia, there should have a good idea of what the future holds for the US, Australia and the western world.

Speaking on Fox News, Sanders said the candidates that Trump campaigned for are doing well. And even though Harvey says none of the candidates particularly excite her, she is planning on voting for all the democratic nominees on the ballot.

With so much at stake, we here at CNN have identified 10 races that help explain the story of the 2018 midterms - and might offer hints about how things are likely to shake out on Election Night.

Polls in Virginia and Florida begin closing at 7 p.m. ET with the majority closed by 9 p.m. But Congress could not remove him from office without a conviction by a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate. All three and Sherrod Brown, a pro-labor senator victorious in OH, are considered potential 2020 Democratic presidential contenders.

Midterm elections are typically hard for the party in power, but the GOP's hold on power was further weakened by an unusually large number of retirements as well as infighting between conservatives and centrists over their allegiance to Trump.

Polls in most states close between 6pm and 8pm (local time) with official results expected in the hours after that. He's campaigned for dozens of candidates at all levels of government.

"Under President Trump's leadership, the Republican National Committee has raised more than a quarter billion dollars, fueling an extraordinary ground game geared toward defying midterm history and protecting the GOP's majorities", the spokesperson added.

Trump was spending the day at the White House, tweeting support for Republicans in the toughest races and preparing to watch the results alongside friends and family, his spokeswoman said.

After a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues, Americans voted on Tuesday to determine the balance of power in the US Congress and shape the future of Donald Trump's presidency.

Trump pointed to his boisterous rally crowds as proof that Republicans were surging at the right time, rejecting suggestions that Democrats entered Election Day with an edge in enthusiasm.

Both sides agreed before the election, at least privately, that Republicans were strongly favored to keep the Senate, where the battlefield was highly favorable to them.

Despite not being on the ballot, Trump made the midterm elections about him.

While most of the attention is focused on the battle for the House and the Senate, the gubernatorial races may be where Democrats stand to gain the most on Tuesday night. Two-page ballots caused delays in NY, however, while voters in Georgia also faced long waits due to technical problems and high turnout, United States media reported.

At a polling place in Snellville, Georgia, more than 100 people took turns sitting in children's chairs and on the floor as they waited in line for hours.

California Democrats hold 39 of their Party's 193 House seats, or over 20 percent.

It also will test Trump's ability to compromise, something he has shown little interest in over the last two years with Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress.

"The drumbeat you hear across America is people voting", House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said as polls opened.

Republicans, who prior to Tuesday's vote had a slim 51-49 hold on the Senate, are keeping their majority, according to early results. Bredesen always said he'd win as long as the race didn't get nationalized, but he started slipping in polls around the time of the Kavanaugh fight.

Over three quarters of voters think Americans are becoming more politically divided. Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion. There were no serious injuries but an estimated 11,000 residents were left without electricity.

Dry weather was forecast for the West and Southwest, but significant snow accumulations were expected across the northern Rockies.
